Last week my kids told me how they were rushed into class during recess. A school official came over the PA and told the children to return to their classes at once, there was a Pit Bull on the school grounds. One of the teachers was absolutely panicked and was screaming at the children to run.
My 11 year daughter and a friend went over to the teacher, and the friend informed the teacher that they both owned Pit Bulls and that they were sweet dogs that were not likely to hurt people. The teacher’s response in disgust was, “YOU HAVE ONE OF THOSE ATTACK DOGS!!! THEY ARE GOING TO EAT YOUR FACE OFF!!!" My daughter did not make any comment, but she said she wanted to. I can understand having a school policy to return children to class if any dog shows up on school grounds without a master, but this seemed over the top because of the breed. After a little thought, my daughter and I came up with an appropriate way to respond to her aggravation with the panicked teacher; she/we are going to write a paper on the Pit Bull breed and include the actual stats on attacks compared to other breeds. She is going to turn it in to the "EAT YOUR FACE OFF" teacher and also to her own teacher. I told her it's easier to think of those teachers and panicked students as stupid and just write them off, but the right, and harder, thing to do was to at least try to educate them. I'm hoping the teacher respects her effort and reads the paper. I will keep you all informed on the reaction we get. |
