Default Dog meat taken off the menu......

China - The dog meat industry

13 Jan 2010
Restaurants and hotels in the Chinese capital have been asked to take dog meat off the menu during Olympics and Paralympics due to concerns that the canine dishes might be offensive to Westerners and animal rights activists.
“Gourmets with a special predilection for dog meat will be disappointed if they come to the Chinese capital in the coming two months,” a Beijing Tourism Bureau official said.
The Beijing Catering Trade Association (BETA) has issued a circular forbidding all the 112-designated restaurants from providing dog meat dishes during Olympics and strongly advised other establishments to suspend serving the canine delicacy until September.
“If a customer orders dog meat, the restaurant staff should patiently suggest another entree,” Xiong Yumei, the Bureaus Vice-Director, was quoted as saying by official Xinhua news agency. “Conflicts should be avoided.” Canine dishes are popular among the Korean community in Beijing, as also in Yunnan and Guizhou restaurants.
Apart from being a delicacy, dog meat is also believed by many Chinese to be an effective element to lower blood pressure. Some also think it boosts “sexual prowess”.
Animal rights and environmental activists claim dogs are brutally killed with clubs and knives in China’s dog meat industry.

I think that is ridiculous.

When the US has the Olympics, do we take beef off the menu so not to offend the Indians?

If people don't want to have dog meat, then just don't order it. China shouldn't have to change their menu, because the Westerners have double standards. lol.

I agree with you here, the dogs used for meat are not pet dogs they developed differently like I said on a different post, there is no reason to take it off the menu when its part of there culture...and its really deep in there culture.

China is all about trying to present a face to the world. Thats why they did it, no other reason. They want the world to think they are everything and don't want any sort of questions being asked about their practices. THIS is deeply ingrained in their culture.

I wished they hadn't of.It's their business and it's just catering to the AR groups. While dog may be mans best friend and all,it's still an animal, same as a cow or chicken.I usually disagree with most everything China stands for but if they like dog meat, what does it hurt.I won't be cooking up a dog anytime soon but meat is meat when it comes right down to it.It's ridiculious for the worry to be with how their animals are treated with the way they treat their people.

China does what China wants to do. Try bending them and they won't give. Thats the benefit of being argueably the most powerful nation on earth. This was their call. No-one can pin this on animal rights groups or anyone else.

It is their culture and I don't think anyone or country has the right to ask them to stop doing what they do all the time.

I have seen the racoondog video when they skin it without killing it, which I agree is pretty brutal, but it was also from my understanding an AR video. So, they might have just showed one of the few bad guys, or maybe that is common. It's hard to say when an AR group is involved.

---------- Post added at 10:49 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:45 PM ----------

i know which one you mean cool, about the skinning animal, where its still alive. first time a video ever made me throw up, and i have a normally iron stumach, that video and this recent one i put up, i will never be the same. i literally saw myself walking up to these people, and letting off an automatic gun on them. I know its what they do, but dogs are my weakness.
