Default Wrongful Death of my dog Bentley
On December 22nd 2009 I had a grooming appointment for my beloved dog bentley. I usually have him groomed at petsmart. However my finance found a new vet Friendly animal hospital. There was a coupon in the penny saver it was 40 dollars cheaper then petsmart so we wanted to try them out. I got off work went home picked up my dog and arrived at the hospital at 415pm pacific standard time.

Bentley was new to this hospital so i had to file some paperwork. While waiting in the lobby some children were playing with bentley. This is not unsual bentley loves children as well as people. Bentley was adopted from the humane society on November 22 2008. He was the dog of the month for several months. And everyone who ever encoutered bentley loved him. Petsmarts records indicate that he was a very friendly dog as well.

After the paperwork was complete, I was asked to walk Bentley into the back and place him in the cage. This did not feel normal usually petsmart walks him into the back. Being young i just looked at this as a different company different procedure.

Ten minutes later i arrived home as i pulled into my driveway i recived a phone call from friendly animal hospital. The vet tech was very dramatic and says that Bentley was being aggressive and i needed to come back right now.

When i arrived Stepanie the groomer who check bentley into this facility had a very small band aid on her nose. She then cliamed my dog bit her in the face. At this point i was very skeptical because Bentley is a pitbull and he does not bite nor does he even bark. And if this is accurate it would not be a little scratch that looks like it was done by a fingernail. There would be severe wounds.

Before i could get into that. They told me my dog got out of the facility. He somehow made it through Four doors out into the lobby the outside. I ran out to my car and started to look for my dog. i was driving through the neighborhoods in the area and could not find him. A good year tire man found him five minutes later dead in the street he was hit by a car.

Animal control was at the scence the took him back to friendly animal hospital. My finance arrived just seconds later devastated. (this was like her child). He then told my finance that he was going to be put to sleep anyways. And that his head needed to be cut off to check for rabies. How could someone say that to a family in this situation. WE LOVED OUR DOG. He was not considered property to us he was family

So sorry to hear about Bentley. I hope you've thought about persuing some legal action against the groomer.

How horrible for you... I'm so terribly sorry...you need to find out what really happened there... befriend the assistants there, someone will talk. Would you post a picture of Bentley?
And I guess I just learned another lesson - groom my dogs myself, and be super-careful about leaving them at the vet... I'm scared now...

First and formost I'am sorry for your loss,This would not end until I found out what really happened,Like everyone said there could be grounds for a lawsuit, their story just don't sound right, I also would write a letter to Animal Control over the comments made, won't bring your dog back but might make you feel better. Again sorry for your loss. RIP Bentley

I am so sorry for your loss RIP Bentley, like others have said I would get the full story and file a lawsuit. You entrusted these people with your dog, and even if he did scratch her they let him out of the facility and caused his dead. Prove he had his shots and send a copy with a letter to the AC about what harsh words they said to you. Get the media involved if you can in a good way for you. Find out if anyone else has had issues with this hospital before. I hope you are able to get justice for Bentley, keep us updated on your fight.

this makes no sense to me. its there fault he got out and most places dont take dog without a rabies vaccine so there is no reason for him to be beheaded. definitly sue!!

yea, about the don't take dogs without a rabies vaccine, I know for a fact at petsmart you can't walk in without your shots and Bentley had been going there to get groomed so that says he had his shots before this happened.

no reason to have a dog decapitated if he is current on rabies.

im so sorry for your loss.
rip bentley.

keep in mind that he could have bit the technician, they dont ushually make that stuff up. a vet hospital smells a lot different than a grooming saloon. dogs are more scared there, and there is the smell of blood, surgery ect. he very well might have gotten more scared there, for sure. despite that, there is no reason he should have got lose, and they are more than guilty for that!

Vet techs should be used to dog behaviors. I would say that tech was less than qualified for their job. Also they are definately liable for the dog escaping, and should have delt with a bite much more professionally.

I agree with hucklebutt... a vet hospital can be scarey. The smells can include the smell of death to a dog. And your dog was current on rabies Im assuming as well.

Im so sorry.

Im never leaving my dog with a groomer after reading this. The only time I will leave him again is when he gets surgery, in a familiar animal hospital. I cut my boys nails and bathe him.

After reading this and the fella that left his dog at the kennel as probably gonna have to put it to sleep.

Glad I never ever have/had to take any of my dogs to either of these places. It's bad enough when I have to take them to the vet,I have to worry if they are gonna over-medicate my dog/puppy.

Definitely makes me feel better that all my vacations are at home... sure it would be nice to go somewhere, but I have always been reluctant to leave my dogs with anyone... I don't even trust the kids 100% with them, even though I know they will take good care of them. I am always uneasy with leaving Mollie and Bella in anyone's care, this thread proves it only takes a split second for something bad to happen. (But seriously, I don't think either one of my kids would even know where to find the dog food... I can see Bella and Mollie now, trying to "show" the humans where their food is. )

No matter what took place, they were/are still responsible for properly containing your dog. They failed and you have every right to pursue legal action against them.

you would not be the first to have had this happen under the care of petsmart/banfield. File a law suite asap!

Sorry for your loss.
