Default Educating our kids
How many of you with kids have actually shown videos on dogfighting and what actually happens to the dogs. And also teach the child how to train the dogs so that when they are adults they are prepared to own this breed of dog. Just curios because my 5 yr old has watched videos with me and I have to tell her that there are some really bad people in the world.

I've shown mine, but theyre much older. I think its important for them to know exactly what these guys are capable of if not properly handled and supervised.

You really have to own and live with these dogs to understand what theyre all about. The videos are a great way to reinforce that.

My kids know more about this breed than most owners out there. Daemon could surpirse some people on the amount he's absorbed over the years. Sometimes he'll ask questions that surprise me! lol

My kids cut their teeth on a break stick..LOL.
Both of 'em were jr handlers. I have instilled a healthy respect for all breeds of dogs as well as the APBT.

I don't have kids...but I have an 8 year old sister. She's great because she learned to be dominate by growing up with a rotti who is 6 months old than her. She's also be really exposed to pit bulls (mine mostly) so she knows they aren't out to eat kids As far as "what they are capable of" and "dogfighting"...she watches enough animal cop shows to know that they can be fighting dogs. But since she doesn't live with them and can't own her own dog yet, we haven't dove into the harshness of it all.

Your kids are awesome Zoe!! My kids are grown, but I would have liked to have gotten them into this breed and education about it when they were younger.... now, they barely listen to anything I say, because they already know everything there is to know in the world.

I'm sorry if I'm wrong but wouldn't showing a video of dogs fighting traumatize the kid???

It's funny, but I never thought he was listening to half the crap I babbled about. I thought he was just tuning it all out, nodding and ''yes mom''ing me. The other day he was like "If you could name the APBT that made the most inpact on the breed, who would you choose?" I'm like ''WTF? Is my son turning into PBC!?"

Good question, and that's up to the individual parents to decide. I have two girls, 9 and 11 and I don't belive in compleatly sheltering them from the cruelties of the world. They need to know, for their own protection, what people are capable of doing. For us it's a good example of right or wrong.

They get soooo mad when they see anything about animal cruelty. We watch allot of animal shows on TV and my oldest wants to become a animal behaviorist.

IMO I don't think kids should believe the whole world is sunshine and lollipops; they should know evil should be avoided and kindness be rewarded and shared. My 2 cents...

LOL too funny,

no kiddos yet, someday. and yes i'll have them get educated and teach them how to train a dog.
and have them become responsible bulldog owners, etc.

however i still think this breed is NOT for everyone to own, IMHO.

My boys 22 and 19 grew up owning this breed and learned early how to care for them and what they were all about.

I think my son knows about that bad stuff said about this breed. But what I would like to know is if there is a book or article out there he could read that would help him develop a good relationship with the dog. Doesnt have to be breed specific. More like a dog training and parenting book for kids.

I think parents would need to use some common sense and only show that to age appropriate kids.

I've taught my own kids/grandkids respect for all animals....and I continue to teach kids through my Daycare.

my parents always tried to teach me to stay away from "these types" of dogs, as they put it. i never bought into it. since the little stray pittie that caught my heart at a very young age, i educated myself. i went to the library and read about the breed and when i finally got a computer, i looked it up online and found the dogfighting information. it just instilled a deep respect for what some dogs have been through and where the breed came from.
if i had kids, theyd see the videos. you cant begin to understand it if you don't see it. you have to understand where the breed came from to understand what they've become and overcome.

I think kids should be taught to respect all animals.

As far as showing dogfighting videos to kids, I would leave that to the discretion of the parents.

Forgive me if I'm taking this the wrong way, but the way you are putting this and referring to dog fighting a "spot" leads me to believe your for it!?! I'm very new to this forum, but if I'm not mistaken, some posters are involved in this barbaric and very illegal sport. I don't think it's up to oppinion or debate if it's moral or not, it's NOT! And just because it's been done for a long time doesn't give the act any validity. It's no differen't than justifying scarification or female circumcision (human children) as a "cultrial" ritual. If you do any of the above in this contry and get caught, you should go to jail.

I'm probably going to get flamed for this, but I don't care. Wrong is wrong. This seems to go on here and just get ignored. I hope I'm taking what you are saying the wrong way and if I am, I apologize in advance. If not, well what can I say that I already have said.

I'm no bunny hugging fruit-cake. I hunt, and sometimes hunt birds and small game with a dog. Notice I said hunt WITH a dog. Throwing to dogs together is NOT a sport, it's just wrong.

Flame-on!

snakeshack: this forum does not condone dogfighting in any way, shape or form. There will be, from time to time, discussions regarding the history of this breed but that's all it is, a discussion.

i have had my 9 year old watch those stupid animal cops shows on animal planet, those people think they know all htere is to know but they dont and my kid knows that,i have also explained to him that these ghetto dog fighters are idiots and should be avoided, that they dont know anything about the dogs and could care less about them.i have also explained the history of dogfighting and that it is illegal.and he knows that there is a gignatic difference between old time dogmen that had there dogs in the pits, that actually took care of their dogs after a match and the ghetto idiots today that think its funny to destroy a dog.my kids love apbts and are always begging to play with the my new pup

snakeshack, I agree with you. I think there are a few people on here who use apbt for the "sport". Ive been figuring it out from the language they use in posts as well. That sickens me. What I dont understand is why dont they go to another pitbull forum for gamedogs (from what I understand might mean dog fighting or other typical sports for pitbulls-not always just the bad one) I made a thread to find out what CUR meant and I was ridiculed by one member for not knowing what it meant and not knowing the breed. From what I gathered a cur can be used to describe a dog that quits fighting (the game) While the APBT was bred for inhuman reasons from the get go, today he is a loving pet and the history is important but encouraging any type of aggression in a dog IMHO is wrong.
