Perhaps the most damaging pit bull myth yet...
It took me awhile to figure this one out.
Veronica is 3; and she started really filling out around 18 months. She's a tad overweight. Not horrifyingly unhealthily so...but she could lose a pound or 8. We're working on it; but truth be told; despite her breed, she's not an overly athletic dog...and she really, really, really likes to eat. I have come to accept that she will never be one of those ripped, muscular dogs...which is OK because I've also come to accept that I will never be 1 of those ripped, muscular people...so; it is what it is. But despite the fact that Veronica is obviously a bit of a chunky monkey...the general public can not look through her pit bull persona enough to see this. This is a conversation I generally have at least 2 to 3 a times month when we are out and about: Friendly stranger patting Veronica: "Wow!! She's all muscle"! Me: What?? FS: You can tell she's a stong dog; all muscle. Me: Ummm; not really...she's actually overweight. FS (Grasping Veronica about the middle and sort of moving her fat around...good thing to Veronica any touching is good touching): Oh no...you can feel the muscle! Me: Actually she weighs 53 pounds. The vet says she needs to weigh 45 to 48. You're actually rolling her fat around. FS: Are you sure? I don't think so. She looks good to me. All muscle! Me: http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/confused.png So apparently all pit bulls are "all muscle". I'm thinking that as long as I only go out with the dog; maybe I can return my chocoate brownie flavor & fiber health bars, stop at the bakery, get an extra-creamy New York style cheesecake...and everyone will think I'm all muscle too! http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.png |
I don't know about most damaging myth, but most affective marketing device for a lot of bully breeders.

Now THERE'S a myth I can get behind! I'll have Evan whip you one up. He makes the best cheesecake ever. I'll have him do a 6 incher so you don't feel TOO guilty. Graham cracker or chocolate wafer cookie crust? http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/biggrin.png |
People tell me how solid and muscular Gypsy is all the time too--right now she's just plain chubby, lol.

I am still laughing about this one, thanks. My Archie is 3-4 lbs over weight and has allergies and puffs up when on them w/ water weight. we get the opposite and scolded when he is on his pred and it makes me feel horrible and I get tired of explaining about his meds, but like i said he is a few lbs over and he has become quite lazy the last year and a half. good post, very funny.

and Galadriel can I have some too!? |
Yeah, Bubba got a little chunky when we first had him(he gained 15 lbs, he should only have gained about 10) and people still commented on how his muscles seemed to ripple when he walked...uhm, that's actually fat jiggling, not muscle.

My muscles hang a little over my belt these days!
