Tonight in class is the first night they are going to meet Jaci. My stomach is in knots because I know Jaci is going to love them but I am afraid they are going to try and treat Jaci badly. I just hope it all goes well. If they try to harass in class I will have to get nasty. I always say it isn't the Pit Bull you have to watch out for, it is the Pit Bull owner.

Sorry for taking so long to update how the class went.

The first night was scarey! When we walked in there was a Golden Retriever trying to attack Jaci. Then the trainer walked up to me and told me to keep my dog away from the other dogs.

There was a German Shepherd mix that kept trying to attack the trainers.

There was a Chocolate Lab that wouldn't listen to his owner for anything.

Then was Jaci all sweet and quiet and listened to everything I said! We are definitely the top of our class and she is the only one in class that doesn't have to wear a prong collar because she is so well behaved. The trainers all commented on how good of a girl she is after class. I knew she would win them over!

Default First night of class Ugh!
The first night of obedience classes are just the orientation and you can't bring your dog. I had to turn in the verifications of shots and the instructors freaked out when they found out Jaci is a Pit Bull.

Instructor "Where did you get your dog?"
Me "She was a rescue from a shelter in Texas."
Instructor "Oh, because the Pit Bulls from this town are untrainable."
Me
Instructor "Your dog is 4 years old. What problems are you having with her?"
Me "None I want to work for her CGC."
Instructor :shakes her head:
Instructor "My little dog was attacked by a Pit Bull and caused $300 worth of damage."
Me "I wouldn't have signed my dog up if I thought she was going to eat another dog."
Instructor "Your dog will be in the class with Rottweilers and German Shepherds so she better not cause any problems."
Me "She won't!"

Then she walked over to another instructor and I heard her say my name and "Pit Bull" and they just shook their heads.

Jaci and I are going to these classes and we are going to rock in this class and they are going to feel like idiots!

FREAKING AMEN!!!! You go for it!!! Show those jerks that your dog is the best of the best!!!

The 12 year old (ok, not really, but he looks 12 years old to me ) anyway, the instructor of Bella's class knows she's a rescue, knows she's APBT mix, and didn't have a problem with her. Matter of fact, her and his Boxer Brutus, who looks identical to Bella, got along great!! What I'm worried about are the other idiots that are taking the class!!

Let's BOTH rock the house with our dogs, and show them a thing or two!! When does your classes start? Ours start April 25, but it's Bella's first classes, then she goes for her CGC, then her advanced training classes... so about 6 months of training in all. I say, "Let's do it girlfriend"!!!

Personally, if it were me, I'd find a different class; get Jaci's CGC and then go show it to that instructor. I'm not big on having someone attempting to help me that thinks that our dogs are untrainable just because of it's breed.

I agree, but also realize that you may not have other options where you are.

Be prepared to be scrutinized, other than that:

Go get 'em Tiger!

That so stinks. I am sorry that happened to you.

For what it's worth, I took a beginner class with my very pitty pitty and the instructor ended up using me as his demo dog for almost every exercise because my guy was stellar and the instructor's dog was not.

I got invited to teach the next session.

Go change some minds! When my guy got jumped by a golden and just ignored it completely, everyone relaxed. People just don't know any better, but trainers sure should.

I still can't wrap my head around a bigoted trainer. So is the breed untrainable, or is the trainer just lame? Hmmmmmmm........

Just do your think...your dog will do the rest...and the others in the class might learn a bit about "pit bulls". Screw the Instructor...

Agreed! I think the most important thing in this situation is to teach others what a PB is really capable of.

I recently took my boy to a car show and got that evil look by a schnauzer owner, about 1/2 hr later when my boy was walking perfectly by my side her "non dog" dog tried to attack Osiris while she was chit chatting I got a "oh, I'm sorry" from the owner.

It never ends, just do your best to educate!

This so reminds me of a time I went with my friend to a conformation training class for his bull mastiff. Not only were the people there generally snobby towards my friend as he's all tattooed up, but as well, they tended to be ''pedigree snobs''. lol My friend got permission from the instructor for me to bring Venus along, just to watch while he trained. I got some serious evil eye walkin' in there with my ''vicious pit bull'' nevermind she was ''predigree-less". By the end of the night, she had a little fan club! lol Venus lived for ''tricks for treats'' and she was watching all the other dogs do ''tricks for treats'' so she was doing them from the sidelines right along with them, throwing in some roll overs and shake a paws, in hopes she'd get some food! She had never even been to any sort of training class before and she showed all of them up! lol Good times.
