Default Sense of self?
Think dogs can look at themself and recongize what they're seeing.

Mars spends a lot of time doing this....

Debo does that too, once in a while. I really have no earthly idea what is going through his head!

We don't have many mirrors. I should see what Tess would do if she saw herself in a mirror. lol.

Every night at bedtime, Bess sits on the edge of the bed and admires herself in the dresser mirror.

OMG! Mars is beautiful!!
Years ago, we had a Golden. She was sweet, but not the brightest match in the box. Mom had this brilliant plan to make the hallway look bigger/brighter by lining a wall with mirrors. Pumpkin can around the corner, saw the 'other' dog in the mirror and attacked it. Mind you, she got along with everyone before. From then on, we had to keep her out of that hallway because she just HATED that 'other' dog. Poor ole girl.

exactly, a lot of times I see dogs barking at their reflection or shadow. It just seems that he gets whats going on sometimes though. He'll look in the mirror then turn to look behind him, then look back in the mirror. Sometimes this will go on for more than five minutes at a time.

Sophie loved the mirror when she was a pup and then grew out of it and moved on to the TV. Boo doesn't get the mirror or the TV. He thinks Sophie is crazy

No, I don't believe a dog can recognize his or her self in the mirror. I base this on the dogs I've had that bark and carry on when they see their reflect and act like it is another dog. I think they look and see another dog.. but can't smell a strange dog in the room so it sort of throws them for a loop.

I don't know, I think Veronica developed a "sense of self". When she was a puppy and she saw her reflection in a mirror or window she would run up to it with her tail wagging and whine pitifully. It was heartbreakingly sad, as I took that to indicate she was missing all the pups she grew up with.

Now as an adult if she sees her reflection, she just gives it a passing glance, sort of a "Oh yeah, I'm hot...nobody saw me look though, right...cause that would be uncool".

Mars is absolutely gorgeous so I can see why he is so taken with himself.

I agree usually I see them try to get that "other dog". He just seems so fixated and doesn't bark or act stange just looks and observes whats going on like he's looking at himself and the living room and us like its a different version or something. its strange.
Think it'd be possible for them to realize it is them again? not really like this is me. but I've sat there with him petting him. He sees that he's being pet and also feels it. sees me there with him, hears me, feels me. Couldn't it be possible for them to figure it out. I mean they are as smart as a small child right??
