Well, the dog warden hasn't returned my calls yet. I just spoke with my lawyer and even if my dogs are off leash on my property I'm not responsible. Also, if it is endangering my cattle, I would not be in the wrong to shoot it.

Before I get called out on this, I have no plans of shooting it. At this point, I don't care what happens to it.

Default PA Dog Law
Is anyone here familiar with PA's dog laws? I've left numerous messages for our dog warden and haven't heard back from him.

The neighbors down the road have a chi-mix that runs loose. There have been problems in the past with this dog going after our cattle. It was contained for awhile, but now it's running loose again. Both of my dogs (10 mo? rescue pit bull & 4yr old scottish terrier) can be DA.

If either of them hurt or killed it would I be responsible if it was on my property?

You might want to take pictures or a video of the loose dog on your property

All dogs must be under control and must not be allowed to run at large. Dogs are personal property, and owners are responsible for damages caused their dog.

Have you talked to your neighbor about the issue?

Call your dog warden again. Call your local shelter. Or, when the dog ventures on to your property again, scoop the little chit up and take him to your nearest shelter.

I have pics of it on my front porch steps. We tried talking to them last year when it went after our bulls. The response we got was: We moved to the country so we wouldn't have to tie our dog. We thought of catching it and taking it to a shelter in NY so they wouldn't find it, but they would just get another.

In the dog laws it talks about a dog biting a human or domestic animal, but it doesn't say anything about a dog at large being attacked by your dog on your property.

I'm surprised it's still alive, we have a cougar that has been prowling around here. But then again it would probably only be an appetizer.

What county are you in?

I've already had it out with my neighbor about their dog. I gave them a copy of the dog law, plus a pamphlet our county makes available. I then told her that if I catch her dog on my property, I will take it to the shelter.

I can understand a dog getting loose every once in awhile, but when it becomes a consistant issue, that's owner irresponsibility.

Thanks Purple. We're in Tioga county. This dog lives almost 1/2 mile down the road and there is another piece of property in between. I'm about 30 miles south of Elmira and have thought about taking it to the shelter up there. It would probably take a day or so for them to miss it.

That link had a lot more info than what I found.

Definitely irresponsible, they also have chickens and goats that aren't contained. At least once a week you see a dead chicken in the road. But they don't bother me because they stay off my property.

My scottie used to be able to go off leash when I was out with her and the pit would be off for short periods to play with her spring pole or ball. They're both well trained, but I don't want to take any chances, so now they're on a tie-out. I'll just keep calling the dog warden and filling up his answering machine.

BTW: Bess, still wants the bug back! She knows what your avatar looks like and keeps watching for it.

NO BUG!

JMO, I would think if you could shoot that dog for messing with your livestock, that it wandering in and getting hurt by one of yours wouldn't be an issue. Honestly, it might be the best thing for it, because maybe then it'd learn its lesson and not come back. We've had similar things happen here (dogs acting up until one day they get their nose chomped and then they settle down).

I also live in P.A....
Im in Wayne County....And from what I have seen the dog laws suck !
If a dog is being mistreated all they do is fine the owner...
The dog is still there property , there fore they could shoot there dog and its OK !!!!!
Having pit bulls... I have a 7 foot fence covering about 1acre for my dogs to go out and play in...
My worst fear is that they could get loose....
Pit bulls have a very bad rap here.. and if they went on someones property the owner cold very well shoot them and nothing would happen to them !!
I on the other hand would go to jail... because if anyone hurt my dogs I would have to return the favor !

Well it's not really the dogs fault. The dog is just being a dog. The owner shouldn't be letting his little chi run loose! I don't think I would have the gaul to take it to the pound, but I could never shoot a dog for just running around when it's the owner's responsibility!

If the dog is on your property and you've complained several times, then it especially won't get you in trouble if your dogs attack it.
I would definitely do something with the dog the next time I saw it on my property... where I live, I would take it to the pound because I have a really good relationship with the people who work there and if the dog was adoptable they'd make sure it made it out alive.
