Well we are back.......
It was a fun day...albeit rainy and cold lol Samson didn't place. It was a super tough class...11 dogs and 2-3 year old males is always the biggest and most competitive. So I asked the judge after our class what he needed to change (why he didn't place) and she said his conformation is great except for his neck is a little long (she suggested I get a 2" collar for him next time to make his neck look shorter) and he needs to be 'tightened up" some. She also said he needs to have more attitude. Being the 2-3 males class they are all full of piss and vinegar lol Samson is very laid...other dogs would bark at him and he would look at them like "What the hell is your problem?" lol Also the cold and wetness didn't help...he really wanted to be home in bed with Daphne, not in the cold with a bunch of dogs barking at him! lol Maybe I shouldn't spoil him so much...... ![]() I don't know how I'm going to change this....I'm actually thinking I will just leave him be and work on his conformation.....if he looks good enough I don't think they can deny him a ribbon because he isn't "hot". I didn't get any pictures (duh I was in the ring! LMAO) but some friends of mine did and as soon as they send them to me I will post them...... |

Sampson was beautiful, but you're right, 2-3 males is incredibly difficult. As for my advice on the 2" collar... There are always tricks to help you fool the Judge. As a handler, it is your job to hide things from the Judge, its the Judges job to see them. Keep your ears open to tips, and see if they help. I know that the tips I received when I began handling certainly helped me excel. As for him not firing off, there is a trick for that too... Teach your dog to speak, thats what I did to MeKai, and now when I start him up, he doesnt stop. LOL!

Aloha_girl = the judge? lol Wow glad I didn't say anything bad about you! LMAO just kidding!
![]() ![]() I hope nobody thinks I am whining or not agreeing with your decision, I mean you are the judge and you obviously know what you are doing....lol Thanks for the ideas on the 2 inch collar! I HAD a 2" collar on him but I bought the one he was wearing and a leash to match that morning for him. I should have kept his old one! As for him not firing off I am going to try and work on it. One problem I think was that he was inside and he was not in his element. All the barking really threw him. he has a stable temperament but that not something he is used to. lol I am hoping the next show will be outside and he will come out of his sheltered, spoiled shell. I hope to get him his CGC this year....does anyway know if any AADR shows that are held in this area will have a CGC test? I know the one in Durham the 18th of April will have one. |

She also said he needs to have more attitude. Being the 2-3 males class they are all full of piss and vinegar lol Here is what the AADR standard says: NECK – 3 points The neck should be muscular, and long enough that when the dog stands naturally on a slack leash, the bottom line of the jaw is level with, or just above the center of the spine when viewed from the side. About 3/4ths the width of the jaw where it joins the skull, the neck widens gradually until it transitions smoothly into the shoulders. I was always told by my mentors to never use a 2" collar - makes their neck look too short. Yep - 2-3 males is one of the hardest classes. That and attitude I can agree with. |

I would agree with your mentor dtwo, if the dog didnt have a bit of a long neck. Most of my dogs I use 1" collars on, I have a dog however thats neck is a bit long and the 2" collar gives the optical illusion that her neck is in proportion. Just a little trick I use... Thats all. The decision is up to the individual to use or not to use.
