cat needs a home
 

Hi all, we have a black/orange/white cat (tortoise shell, I believe), approximately 10 years old, that needs a new home. I've had her since she was a kitten.. my wife is allergic to cats which she dealt with but now our daughter is showing signs of allergies as well.

the cat is well, declawed in the front, never been over 8 lbs. I'm willing to supply a clean bill of health via a vet checkup, and some food and litter. she is used to having a dog around but is not a huge fan of him. i'm not sure how she would be with another cat.

Have you had your daughter allergy-tested? Pet allergies are often what doctors jump to first. But upon testing, they find out that the child is allergic to something else.

And if I can also add -- children usually grow out of allergies. You're talking about a permanent solution to a likely temporary problem (if in fact the child is actually allergic to the cat).

i'm not a fan of people rehoming their pets, but sometimes it is necessary. i certainly agree with having the child allergy tested, but it can take years for a child to grow out of an allergy (if they ever do) and in the mean time they have a kid that is miserable!

I know that allergies differ in severity, but children aren't ALWAYS miserable until they grow out if it. I wasn't. I burst into tears when I found out I was allergic to our family dog. I took allergy meds, and eventually, I became accustomed to the constant presence of the same allergen. I now have three dogs of my own -- no meds necessary.

unfortunately as heartbreaking as it is children come first. The OP is being responsible by finding a home themselves. Just PLEASE OP do not take her to ACCT. Let me know before it comes to that. i don't know what i would do but i would do something.

Thank you all for your thoughtful and candid responses. My wife has major allergy issues with cats ... bad enough so that if the cat brushes up against her she ends up with a skin reaction. She has frequent sneezing fits, itchy eyes, runny nose, etc. When we moved in together the cat was banned from the bedroom and ended up spending a large amount of time in the basement. My daughter's reaction is just the straw that is breaking the camel's back, so to say. The cat deserves a better quality of life, as do my family members. I hope to find a great home for her and I will not take her anyplace that I don't feel comfortable with... we've dealt with the issue for a few years now so a few weeks of searching will not hurt.
