OK, all good.
i just pointed PdJ in the direction of a similar quality but cheaper watch that might have been of interest to him.

Fairy-nuff.

As far as it goes, there are just oodles of Valjoux chronographs out there. They may all have different names on the dial, they may not be easily recognisable due to various cutaways and alterations but down under the balance wheel, on the base plate should be the makers stamp.

I'd be looking for a Lemania. http://www.mactalk.com.au/23/32989-m...tml#post399105

If anyone's interested, there is a very nice iPhone / iPad app called "Harrison's H1 sea clock". Description here:

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/h1-lo...349415248?mt=8

It is a very nice illustration and description of one of Harrison's early marine chronometers. In app shop look for "harrisons sea clock". Costs just 99c.

Hey Roughie can you identify which Seamasters these are?
The Octagonal one is very thin and I cant remember when I bought it 25-30 years ago? ( yes shes had a hard time of it )
The other is my Dads which has been passed on to me recently , its circa 1960 at least I think.

Are they worth sending off to get a good service? Theres a Omega dealer in the CBD (Sydney) pretty sure it will cost , but they have a sentimental value . Im sure Dads is Auotomatic ie it stops if you stop wearing it and goes if you shake it, mine takes a battery .
Tried looking on web sites but cant find them exactly the same can you helip ID them cheers mate

Brett

When posting photobucket images.. from viewing the page of thumbnails.. hold mouse over the image wait for the pop-up. then select BBcode it should be replaced with the word, copied.. then paste it here.

Your dad's watch is one that will need the back removed to see the case numbers and calibre numbers.

Yours may have them stamped on the outside of the back. This watch needs a new srystal and looks to have had some moisture in it.

That's about as much as I can tell from those photos.

edit, sorry, called away.. back to the job; http://www.thewatchforum.co.uk/index...howtopic=24292

This is likely to be your dad's, http://www.omega-fanatic.com/pages/o...-1000-1002.php though it could be the 960-980 line. I've most likely got parts in stock.

Says Hong Kong on the case, the movement is a Citizen 'd' grade movement branded Miyota(made in Japan), the battery is made in USA.

Has got Mobil on the dial. Promo watch.

Hello roughbarked, if still around. Do you mind if I seek your professional opinion about something?

My dad died about 25 years ago and among his effects was a Tissot watch. It is analogue style with date window and sweep second hand. The case is octagonal and is 32 mm in diameter, the watch face being ~ 29 mm and round. Thickness is about 6 mm. The face is black. On the face is written Seastar Quartz. There is nothing whatsoever on the back of the watch. The glass, which is dead flat, is quite badly scratched. This watch has not operated for more than two decades. Although no longer fashionable, I quite like it and have had thoughts of having it refurbished.

Do you think that it would be possible at this stage? Do you think a replacement glass would be available? Would it be worth the trouble? If so, can you suggest anyone who might do it?

Supplementary question - if a dead battery is left for a long time inside a quartz watch, does it have the potential to damage the watch?

Thanks.

You are lucky the glass is round. A lot of the shaped ones are very difficult to obtain. Dead flat sounds like it had a crystal. Badly scratched means it wasn't a sapphire but likely mineral quartz crystal. Yes it is worth the trouble to replace the crystal if the watch is in good condition. Yes the battery has the potential to damage the watch. Unless it is a lithium battery, it should be changed every two years. Though it is rare these days, the older batteries leaked more often.
Have a good look down around the 6 on the dial with magnification. Some watches do carry identification numbers there.

All I can see at 6 o'clock is "T swiss T" - probably no useful information.

This watch would now be at least 30 years old and hasn't ticked over since the old man died 25 years ago. The dead, degraded battery is still inside it. Do you think revival is possible? (The watch I mean, not the old man.)

Yes, most Tissots only ever had T Swiss Made T on the dial.
Is the back a screw down back or a snap on back?

Have you tried taking a photo of the watch? I'd like to see one. This is a circa 1980 Tissot(not a seastar) for sale brand new(old stock) @£65 + postage.

Not sure. The back is flat and featureless. There are no lugs to enable screwing. I assume snap on.

Oh, one other thing. I can still change date and time, so it's not totally seized up.
