Default What were we thinking?
More classic ads and commentary from yesteryear here

Makes you wonder what we will look back on in twenty years time and ask the same question.

People wonder what happened to truth in advertising... it never existed. You take skewed versions of the truth and use it as a selling point. There's also an ad from the 50s for cigarettes telling women to smoke because it's better for your figure than eating lollies.

I think you will find that legislation relating advertising as well as business ombudsman services have changed the landscape somewhat in this regard. You're far less likely now to see an advertisement that makes an overtly false claim about a product and if you do, there is now a means to lodge a complaint.

On the other hand, advertisers are probably a lot cleverer now about being misleading without being illegal.

Sure, there is undoubtedly a far greater sophistication in advertising now than there was 40 or 50 years ago...

But still, as a result of regulation we are now far less likely to be directly lied to by advertisers.

The implication of the perceived value of a product by stating a value of your product is a tricky area...

yes, it's very common in food products... to some degree I think it is because if you make a claim about a product you have to prove it, hence this product "may help reduce..."

I mean selling 4WDs by showing them crashing and bashing through a remote and rugged beautiful desert when buying a 4WD is very unlikely to result in that kind of experience makes it a kind of lie.
