Default Magnesium alloy corrosion protection
I've got a couple of magnesium alloy engine covers on one of my bikes that I need to coat to keep them looking pretty and stop them corroding.

I tried engine enamel but it just flaked off within a few weeks.

What processes can I use? Can they be anodised, passivated, dipped in some kind of solution or just some special paint ?

Powder coated, or maybe ceramic coated.

Magnesium particulates onto itself in sea water. Someone makes millions with a robotic free nugget-collector. I'd be more worried about case fractures, as the alloy's quite brittle. And if its MX/bush basher, who cares abt looks? Less likely to be stolen, surely?

Does anodising work on magnesium?

Wash your mouth out! I just spent a year restoring it and turning it into a road race bike. It's got to look good

That would be a good solution if it works.

Almost positive thats a no , I can find out though
Powder Coating probobly wont like the heat and get soft when hot.
The right paint anf surface prep wouold be my bet....
Most Electro platings will stick but discolour

Here's a magnesium brake with a nice coating on it. I wonder what it is.

On thinking about it thats the conclusion I had too. Anodising Al enhances the Aluminium oxide layer. Aluminium oxide is a very hard substance, think grinding wheels and sapphires. I don't think magnesium oxide has similar properties at all.

I was thinking of the acid etching prior to anodizing

What a great article , seems you could do any of them though anodising seems to be counterr productive in this case)

Thanks for the input everyone. I spoke to a powdercoaters today. They say they do it quite often. They will beadblast the cases fisrt then immediately ( within minutes to avoid corrosion setting in) coat them with an epoxy primer, then powdercoat them afterwards.

So all's good.

Appologies-that does look nice. I trust that it will reward the effort, if only in concourse d'elegance events. Enjoy. BTW I hope you don't overheat it with the extra insulation.
