Planned manned mission to Mars by 2023
Mars One will establish the first human settlement on Mars in 2023. A habitable settlement will be waiting for the settlers when they land. The settlement will support them while they live and work on Mars the rest of their lives. Every two years after 2023 an additional crew will arrive, such that there is a real living, growing community on Mars. Mars One has created a technical plan for this mission that is as simple as possible. For every component of the mission we have identified at least one potential supplier. Mars One invites you to join us in this next giant leap for mankind! http://mars-one.com
A one-way trip? There'd be some takers for sure no doubt but it seems a tad too ambitious and optimistic. It also makes very sweeping statements without a lot of detail unfortunately. It'd be an utterly amazing experience to see Mars but being stuck there .... ? Edit - they do mention being able to come back to Earth later on - http://mars-one.com/faq-en/19-faq-he...s-this-ethical - still somewhat short on detail though. |

give me comms and an unlimited net connection- id be there in a flash... (and I would even do some sparky stuff if they really wanted me to.... LOL seriously- not even a second thought- give me a ticket... |

The Net connection wouldn't be too good mate, instead of the sub-one second lag time it'd be more five minutes to about 15 minutes. |
With new crew's arriving every two years, it wouldn't be too long before Mars would be capable of returning to Earth in some capacity.

give me a good net connection and 1/2 hr to say byebye to anyone I want to- close the door and press the launch button... pretty much my current lifestyle- so no biggy there- but put me on mars and I would be spending a lot less time online LOL my 2c I wouldnt have any problems with it at all wheres the signup sheet??? |

The factories to process the raw materials into suitable metals and so on would be a lot more difficult though, they'd have to be pre-packaged. |
I'd go to another planet one way without question and I wouldn't care how dangerous it was
I'm pretty damn sick of my life here so its no big deal |
Did you watch the video Hulk? They want to fund this project using media attention. A guy on the video even mentions 'Big Brother'
|
If Mars was a bit bigger it might be another question. A return from Venus, for comparison sake, would be a bit more difficult.

But it does show that it's quite possible right now to do it. |
FWIW, I'd also jump at the chance to go on a treck to Mars, even if it was one way.
Probably about half way there I'd be "WTF was I thinking?", but I'd still be there. I don't know why. It doesn't make sense. But then... "I'm going to MARS!!!"... it doesn't have to make sense! It's just, like, the coolest thing one could semi-reasonably expect to do in this day and age. |
Going to Mars and staying is a whole new beginning for humankind and perhaps a chance to do it right this time. Being such a harsh environment cooperation, sharing, mutual understanding, etc would be essential for survival and become the norm hopefully

Me and my people would be all like "Hey hey hey we're on Mars" and he'd be "Yeah, and I'm stuck in this backwards shithole"! Joking, BC http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/smile.png |

In actual fact, they would be rushed with that many applicants, it would need to be a lottery....And guess what? I wouldn't be among them at this stage. Reason, I have too many commitments on this fart arse little blue orb. The time frame may be questionable though, but that's not the point. The point is getting people to talk about great humanity uniting projects like this, just as our friend BTE Dan has that I posted about the other week. I think the idea is a great idea for space experts and governments to look at and approach in a united fashion. Of late I have been watching a program on "Discovery Science" re possibilities of going to and constructing shelters for human occupation on places such as A cloud city on Venus, Titan, Callisto, Mercury, and then on to a star system 20 L/years distant. Explanations and evaluations as to how the obvious problems to do these seemingly futuristic ventures are overcome are explained by a Dr Basil Singer. I have no doubt there are the usual that will poo poo ideas like this, but I also know that while we have orginisations like NASA and Roscosmos, we will certainly continue to move in that direction, be it by a replica of the Star ship Enterprise or other variations on the theme. |
"Mars One is an extraordinarily daring initiative by people with vision and imagination. This project seems to me to be the only way to fulfill dreams of mankind’s expansion into space."
Nobel prize winner professor dr. Gerard 't Hooft From the Link. |
I can't see any real problems with going and staying on Mars other than the dire financial state of the world right now.
I'm also in favour of sending explorers there as we're already seen a bit through the various rovers & machines, but a human on the spot could do so much more, faster, and better. (And as predicted, the ignore list is getting a working out) |
