What do they cast it in? Clay pots?
It would be likely melted in clay pots, but cast into a sand mould.

I find it pretty cool the thought that in the future, scrapping over the bones of a beast of a civilisation we left behind, someone might melt down coins and crap from our world in a clay cruciable constructed by a creek.

I have all the equipment assembled to begin the construction of a solar furnace. Might have a go at melting a few coins just for fun.

Mollwoll mentioned cold working. I'd say that for those coins largely made of copper, this would be the general method opted for. In an apocalyptic situation.

We got rid of them with very little trouble & on Bali they give lollies as small denomination change.

Ever notice how many cutting instruments are copper?
Like none. Just find a length of mild steel and rub it against something that will abrade it.
You then have a knife.

They'd make good arrowheads though.

I'd think that there'd be no shortage of knives in an apocalypse setting.. re: the book Earth Abides mentioned earlier in the thread.. the infrastructure was still there but the power stations had no one to run them. For a few generations there was no shortage of guns and bullets either.. However eventually they had to resort to hammering out arrow and spear heads from available metals.

I tend to use knives and forks for knives and forks, plenty of them around. I have more knives and forks here than coins.

Shead is full of nails etc. They would make handy arrow heads.

Just a heads up, I think SBS is reshowing A History of Ancient Britain. In the later episodes, they talk about metals, mining and smith basic weapons from scratch. Worth watching, IMO.
