Ethical Food Production

Today I am heading to the city to meet a delivery of meat and pack it into a freezer.
Kids have found a producer who observes strict (and strictly monitored) procedures for raising and killing meat.

I have my own reservations but am surprised and pleased to find that they have found such a deal.

My reservations are chiefly about the overall effectiveness of it but on the other hand I also know that if people didn't take the first small steps no big changes would occur so am happy to cheer them onand help if I can.

Then today I read this.

I am sure (surely?) this could not happen in australia, but still it is shocking reading ... along with spider lily's orangutang vs palm oilt case.

Grandkids are up on both ... check labels for palm oil AND for free range eggs (which are readily sourced from Kangaroo Island ... no foxes and strict cat control so far).

I'd be keen to know of other issues that we could consider in our food shopping.

I'm not a vegetarian but I think it's better to avoid meat generally, good to use ethical sources if you can find them. Meat, fish, eggs etc are not sustainable. There has been a lot of talk recently about protein from insect/arthropod type sources, a lot more efficient and less environmentally damaging, though still pie-in-the-sky stuff.

yes. It was interesting talking to the farmer this morning, He spoke of having to use commercially acceptable jargon in order to be taken seriously which I found sad,

ie kind had to be translated into low stress environment / management.
