Orangutans V Palm Oil
I felt terribly sad when I read this... http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/frown.png
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...oil-firms.html While I use Earth Choice (fairly confident this brand is palm oil free) for washing of my clothes and cleaning products for my floors etc I will be looking closer at my shampoos/conditioners, liquid soaps etc for use of palm oil. Such beautiful creatures! |
The last zoological conference I went to there was a paper given about the fact that the whole palm oil "protecting" of orangutans was just an advertising ploy. They had all these photos of young orangutans chaining in obvious places like the Head Manager's car park. They kill any orangutans that come on to the plantations. The plantations are on their local patches so they are doomed.

Last month there was a very interesting (repeat) story about a young kid and his brother who want to help tackle this problem. I found it very inspiring and also a little sad to see how Daniel's aims were hijacked to suit political purposes (on both sides of politics). Great to see him and his family didn't let that disillusion them to the point where they gave up.
=== The Book Of Daniel 12/03/2012 Introduced by The Chaser's Chris Taylor This week's program tells the story of a young boy whose passion for endangered animals unexpectedly thrust him into the political spotlight. He's Daniel Clarke and at the age of ten, inspired by the late Steve Irwin, he set out to raise funds to conserve habitat for orangutans in Indonesia. But when some of the country's leading politicians suddenly became involved, Daniel found himself centre stage. It was a crash course in what can happen when youthful idealism clashes with hard ball politics. Daniel Clarke and his family have weathered it all and they're now making a real difference to their beloved orangutans. http://www.abc.net.au/austory/specia...el/default.htm === The story is still available on iView for another two days. http://www.abc.net.au/iview/#/program/908406 (I can't find another link to the video on the Australian Story website, only a link to the transcript here). |
