Default Benny Friedman- An appreciation.
Listening to the history of this guy is very impressive.

He threw for 20 TDs in one season when the ball was closer to round than oval.

As his presenter said- 38 out of the last 39 Bear's teams haven't had a QB throw 20 TDs.

Also, in the 20s and early thirties, team didn't throw because more than 2 bad things could happen.

1. You had to be 5 yards behind the line to pass- or a penalty.

2. If you had 3 incompletions on one drive- penalty

3. If you threw an incomplete pass in the end zone it was a touchback.

4. If you threw an interception, you were subject to public caning.

(I made number 4 up)

Only when they liberalized the rules (1936 I believe) did passers like Sammy Baugh and sid Luckman become stars. Once these guy started taking advantage of these rules, 20 TD passes became not so impressive.

Hats off to Benny.
