Anyone ever had this? It's what my dad has right now and it renders Windows inoperable

No he gets into these messes all by himself.

He says hes read that and hes tried doing what it said but he cant get into safe mode.

then download malewarebites (see above), transfer it to a thumb drive and install it onto his pc.
or will windows not boot at all?

wqindows wont boot a vd i dont think it'll execute a program from a thumb drive.... i think he'll need to buy a new one.

no they dont..do you have your windows disk?..if you have a disk insert it into the cd drive and boot from it to get it up and running..there are other fixes also,..there is no need to buy a new drive,..unless they like to spend unnecessarily

Here's an idea. If you know how to change the BIOS boot settings, then get hold of a 1GB memory stick, download Ubuntu onto it and set the BIOS to boot the memory stick first. That should get past the virus, then go from there to get rid of the virus. It worked for me when I had a pesky virus back in June/July.

are you suggesting dana do this?..the safer bet would be the new hard drive

It's not hard to change the Boot Drive order, I've guided even the completely non tech savvy through it.

changing the bios setting is one thing..but doing that along with swapping out memory sticks when dana isnt really tech savy is another animal..hows he going to know what type of memory stick he has along with the pin configuration?.or what to replace it with?..is he going to know if its seated correctly?,..etc...thats what im saying.
don't get me wrong..i like Dana,..but i think even he would feel more comfortable if someone was there with him to help rather than someone from a hundred miles away giving him instruction online

True, but it doesn't have to be that complicated. There are a number of 'flash' devices and programs out there that make the process so easy.

you are absolutely right,..thats why i was asking if he had a windows disk ..so he could at least get it to boot and can install MWB

oddly it disappeared anybody know how thatd happen? ran scans, search, check msconfig and task manager and there was nada

I've changed the boot order hundreds of times on my old computer when i had xp. it's pretty simple.
