Connection Issue

Matt's PC got a virus, so he wiped it clean and used his disc to reinstall XP. I'm under network connections now trying to create a new connection. I've gone through every option. My ISP is Comcast, and unless I need to type something in addition to that, that doesn't work.

Obviously it's not my connection, because the wireless is working.

So how do I get internet on the desktop?

EDIT: And the worst part is: when I try to trouble shoot, it says it can't pull the page up because I'm not connected to the internet! http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...milies/wtf.gif

We never did that. We just plugged the LAN cable in and it worked. Well, when we got internet anyhow.

Not for wireless, for a cable.

So your desktop is plugged right into the cable modem and it's not getting a connection?

Do you have a router or an external modem?

She should have both with comcast...Cuz the laptop is getting a signal from the router...

Sounds like a TCP/IP problem maybe

Glipseagrilia 03-06-2010 01:27 AM

Are you thinking she needs to flush the DNS?

No, it's plugged into the router which is plugged into the modem. Same as it was earlier today before he redid his computer.

Try reinstalling the disc to the router on the desktop.

kilibry 03-06-2010 01:33 AM

Yeah the TCP/IP settings have to be it since it was reformatted, they need to be set up for the cable modem again.

Even if I'm doing a wired connection?

To configure TCP/IP for static addressing

  1. Open Network Connections.
  2. Right-click the network connection you want to configure, and then click Properties.
  3. On the General tab (for a local area connection) or the Networking tab (for all other connections), click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
  4. Click Use the following IP address, and do one of the following:
    • For a local area connection, in IP address, Subnet mask, and Default gateway, type the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway addresses.
    • For all other connections, in IP address, type the IP address.
  5. Click Use the following DNS server addresses.
  6. In Preferred DNS server and Alternate DNS server, type the primary and secondary DNS server addresses.

Urgh. I put the disc in. "The network adapter in this computer is not responding. You must use the Installation Assistant on a computer with a working Ethernet adapter."

Rtebydou 03-06-2010 01:41 AM

I think that's how you set it up

I would, but the part I highlighted red presents a problem: the network connections folder is empty.

Thats why you aren't getting internet then, in order for it to access the net you need the network connection, you'll have to add one

That's what I'm trying to do! Good grief, I hate technology. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/frown.gif
