Beta video player for BlackBerry available

beta version of a new video player for BlackBerry devices is now available from CanWest MediaWorks. The CanWest MediaWorks VideoPlayer is compatible with the BlackBerry 7130e and 8700 models only.

The player is powered by technology from Sona Mobile, which first demonstrated the capabilities of its video player back in May at the Wireless Enterprise Symposium in Orlando, Florida.

CanWest is not charging for the software or use of the service. The only costs associated with using the video player would be the data fees charged by the wireless provider.

Though some of the multimedia capabilities of the BlackBerry have improved over the years, the availability of a video player for the device is quite a leap in functionality. Even with some new bells and whistles added, Research In Motion has tried to keep the functionality of the BlackBerry simple and has fought off adding video and music features while other mobile handset manufacturers have added them. The introduction of video on the BlackBerry opens up a whole new set of possibilities for the device
