I finally got a bit of money to think of buying one and I need advice! All I know is I want something good enough to not be outdated in a few years.

I have a Canon lens, but Nikons are cheap enough to consider buying a lens. I am hard put to buy anything other than Canon or Nikon, but let me know if you like something else.

Why do I want a DSLR? Mainly to take photos at night. I want one that shoots excellently at high ISOs. I want one that can pick up the subtelies in light.

I'm a light recorder and I love film, but I need to learn the new stuff too I guess.

If money was an issue, I would say a Nikon D-40, because it's easiest to start out with in DSLR's and relatively inexpensive. Then with whatever money you have left over you could use to buy some nice lenses. It comes with an 18-55 which works great, then you oughta get a zoom lens, which I think is something like 80-200, and then something wide-angle is fun or like fisheye. You'll also need a good tri pod for night shooting (which run from 100-200$).

If you want something higher quality, I would go for a D90. It's the most bang for you're buck, outside of the D40, IMO.

I picked mine up at best buy. I should have gotten the warranty, because it broke about a year later (flash), I could have fixed it, but for 50$ more I just got an external flash--which is nice, but sometimes a pain in the ass. I really like to buy stuff at Inkleys now that I am more into it. They know a lot more about SLR's, cameras, memory cards, etc. And will answer you're questions better. They also tend to have stuff in stalk more often. I'm not sure about warranties, but I wouldn't be surprised if they had something available. They also have stuff on sale--ALL the time. Memory cards, lenses, I even bought a point and shoot once for 40$.

I'm not the kind of person that likes bell's and whistles. They just get in the way. The simpler a camera is--like simply being able to go into aperature, manual, etc. modes or just shoot auto sometimes because you need to take it quickly. The more I like it. Sometimes you're sitting their fussing with your camera, when you could be getting the best shot of you're life.

I've never heard of ones that self-clean to tell you the truth lol. Just make sure you have caps on it, and get one of those protective filters for each of your lenses. That way if someone or something hit's your camera's lens, then the filter shatters, and not the end of the lens. It's much less expensive to replace a 12$ filter, then a 200$-600$ lens. Then you should also buy some of the cleaner stuff, which isn't very much money either. I bought a cleaning kit for less then 15$.

I bought an extra lithium battery--but the average person probably doesn't need too. Battery life is spectacular for lithium batteries. My extra one is to take on trips in case the first one runs out, I've been away from electricity for ten days--on a trip specifically for photography, and not had to use my spare battery. But if the battery is exposed to the cold a lot, it will run out faster (if it's really cold, and I am running out of juice, I'll hold the battery to my stomach to keep it warm--when I'm not shooting lol)

Well the camera itself won't be the heavy part, but the lenses you use sometimes can be. There are some really good camera straps you can by specifically for this reason. I've forgotten what they are called, but they are supposed to be really great. I'm young and don't get sore so easily, so I haven't boughten one. But you will probably be able to find it somewhere if you google around a bit.

Tripod's are very important. You have to think about what you are putting on top of them. If they fail and you're camera falls, it can be a big, big mess. I got a neat one that actually has a monopod, you can take out of it (a mono pod and trip pod in one!). You also want a light one, in case if you have to carry it around a lot or far, and lighter ones are simply more expensive.

I just recently got a Sony A850, which I find really good. Was well under retail of NZ$4000 as I knew someone who could get one pretty cheap for me ...

I am not a fan of Canon or Nikon personally, although I don't have much substance to that arguement except personal opinion hah. The Sony just seemed to fit me better and was much lighter than similiar priced alternatives, which I find handy.

It also came with all the little extra's like a 20-50mm and 55-300mm lense which do the trick. Although I dream about a having a lense with f2.8 aperture. Also handles Konica Minolta lenses which is not as good as the other brands which are uber interchangeable as I understand.

I guess you have to decide exactly what you want to spend and go to the stores and try them on for size. I would agree with Bri that in general, the less bells and whistles and automatic crap the better.

I have a Nikon D40 and I absolutely love it. It's a great DSLR for beginners. I bought it a couple of years ago on the advice of a professional photographer. I'll post a bit more about it later on when I'm not late for work.

I forget where I bought mine. I know it was about $200 cheaper on the internet as far as the camera. The zoom I bought at Circuit City as that was the best deal at that time. Bought the zoom about a month later. I would go with a longer zoom than a 200

Try to be patient on lens and stuff. Don't buy on the cheap. Save up to get the better stuff. If you have a cheap tripod it will suffice for now. When you buy a new one get one that is smooth to adjust. It will cost you but will last forever and will be worth it

image stabiilisers are a definate bonus.....but as you're using a tripod its not paramount

What causes the noise? Same thing as in film (high ISO?) or is it the camera itself? And f2.8 kicks ass, but isn't that on the body of the camera, not on the lens? Am I being blond?

Yeah I definitely don't want equipment that NEEDS a lot of light, my time to shoot is at night or early dawn with no light.

LOL My canon lens is NOT fancy it is 25-150mm. It came with the camera. It is a nice piece of glass as far as I can tell, but it doesn't do anything special.

So you're a canon person? Which model do you like of Canon? What do you think of the Rebel Txi? Are the Rebel T's better than the Rebel s's....I am with yall on this about less bells and whistles are better BUT I am going to be in school so I do want some bells and whistles so I won't be limited as far as my art goes...

Sorry I'm asking you guys so much, I just really want to educate myself on this and I don't know too many people with DSLRs. Most people in my class borrow their parents or the schools - and they are all pretty much Nikon 40D's so my knowledge is limited and my teacher only likes Nikon so he is hesitant to educate us on other cameras....
