Default Disk Failure Is Imminent
Got a laptop here running Ubuntu 10.04 (same one we talked about awhile back). When it boots it says "Disk Failure Imminent".

If i pull up the SMART Data, it says:

"Reallocated Sector Count: Count of remapped sectors. When the Hard drive finds a read/write/verification error it marks the sector as "reallocated" and transfers data to a special reserved area (spare area).

Under "assessment" it says "failing"

Under "Value" it says:

Normalized: 34
Worst: 34
Threshold: 36
Value: 2705 sectors

Then it goes on to say, "Current Pending Sector Count: Number of sectors waiting to be remapped. If the sector waiting to be remapped is subsequently written or read successfully, this value is decreased and the sector is not remapped. Read errors on the sector will not remap the sector, it will only be remapped on a failed write attempt."

Under "Assessment" is says, "Warning"

Under "Value" it has:

Normalized: 100
Worst: 100
Threshold: 0
Value: 12 sectors

Any input you can provide? Does the HD just need replacing?

Yep it does. You have 12 bad sectors that have formed just recently. 2705 bad sector reads it has had in the past. The drive is grabbing it's chest and turning blue.

If it forming that many that fast then likely the drive head is damaging every sector it touches. One or two sectors sure but over 2000 bad reads and 12 bad sectors formed on boot up? Your worse day had 34 fail at once. 36 failures in when the drive is considered fail beyond repair.

Nline

I was playing my MMOG. All of a sudden, my Hue changed to magenta. Everything is fubar. Ive run Memory test, Video tests (baseline, stress, temp) and everything seems to be checking out.

I cannot find where to fix this. Ive check display setup, but I dont know the acceptable norm settings.

I have a gforce graphics card.

I think the setup i.e. white=code for white has been somehow corrupted to be

white=code for magenta

Where do I check that?

Is this only in the game or is all output color skewed? If so it sounds like a faulty monitor. Check cable connections test with different montior or hook a laptop into it and see if you still have the problem.

just out of curiosity, what would the cost be to replace the HD on a fairly new (1.5 years) ASUS 64 system? It is a "Republic of Gamers" system. Currently has 300g, anything over 150 is still ok.

Don't know what you mean by Republic of Gamers. Is this a laptop or a desktop system?

Well Asus makes about 20 laptops under that name. With a wide variety of specs. Anything for duo core pentiums with 15 inch screens to quad core i7 units with 19 in screens. Desktop replacment style units. Most laptop drives are either 5400 RPM but a few are 7200 RPM and they produce a lot more heat. Not all laptops can take them. Do you know the model number of the ASUS or of the Hard Disk in it? Your SMART drive program should tell you the drive info.
