Windows 7 comes out this week. Is anyone going to upgrade??

I am considering it, since I have XP right now. Vista seemed too buggy for me to jump ship. I have heard a lot of good things about "7".

Anyone got an opinion??

Windows 7 is like Vista a hardware hog. Don't upgrade unless you have some recent hardware.

My opinion? Never upgrade windows. If you are gonna do that, upgrade the machine or just wait. Newer OS's requires a dual core minimum, quad core preferrably. Just keep XP. I like it. It works well, and with everything. Save the 7 "upgrade" for your next machine...after the bugs are worked out and the service packs have been released and established.

Yes but the Video card is weak. I thought that mobo had a built in Chipset for a ATI Radeon 3000?

I would get a mid range or high end video card for that system. And as pointed out above you'll need to fresh install. (Which is what I would recommend even it you could upgrade.)

I am just going by what PC Wizard 2009 says. Copied it right off the screen. How can I check??

What does device manager say?

So windows 7 is a bad idea on an atom powered netbook?
Most things i've read say it's the OS for netbooks in the future.

I'm just going by what I have read.

If I ever decide to buy a netbook i'd probably put the Ubuntu based netbook distro on it myself as i've gotten to the point where I only use windows to play WOW & lately i've been experianceing decent stability playing WOW on linux. I just need to tweak my hardware & drivers a little before I roll the install as a custom Image for re-install purposes.

It will run but without all the toys that make 7 or Vista what it is. Both are eye candy desktops.

Yuck. Upgrade the video card, all the other stuff will work. It will run 7 or Vista but it will be slow if you use Aero and the sidebar/gadgets.

I'm not a big fan of the eye candy just for the sake of eye candy.

I can get by on a minimal linux distro like crunchbang with no desktop icons just fine.

I got my copy in the mail yesterday, bought it during the $50 sale they had earlier in the summer.

I've been running the beta and RC versions of Win 7 most of the summer and I like it. I installed it on a 4 year old laptop that had XP and it worked great, it gave new life to the laptop in my opinion, and it booted faster.

I think the new task bar features are great. And it performs well. The version I use on my desktop churns away for weeks on end without a need to reboot (I've rebooted once due to an app/os problem, not sure what it was, but shutdown and restart, 20 seconds later it works fine again.) It comes out of sleep mode in an instant and also looks good. I knew early on about the 'upgrade' path Microsoft was planning, so I've planned around it with partitioning, as I always do anyway, but I do think it will be a pain for many users. But not as much of a pain as it would be to migrate files and setting to a completely new OS. If you choose to stay in the windows world, I think this is a worthwhile upgrade. If you have an 8 year old computer running XP and expect it to happily run with a brand new version of the OS, you are naive. Same goes for macs. And linux.

how many distros of linux do you run? you mention one yesterday and another today.

I Run PCLinuxOS on my bedroom Desktop.
I run Slitaz on my 266mhz p2 laptop.
I run CrunchBang on my 650mhz P3 laptop & my P4 laptop.
The 650mhz laptop is mine.
The P4 is work supplied laptop & I dual boot crunchbang & XP.

I put crunchbang on it because I like using boxee.tv on linux to watch streaming video on my back porch while I grill. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/smile.png

I get too much stuttering in windows on that laptop & didn't want a fullblown ubuntu install.

I looked into boxee once. Can you still use that with Hulu?

Yes.
But Hulu will eventually go pay & I don't know if that will change anything.

I doubt it will.

Boxee can pass log-on info to pandora.com so it should be able to do it with Hulu.

I've thought about buying a netbook capable of HD playback for something like that. You can get them for $200 and they are tiny.

Do you use a remote with yours?

I've got the media center remote.
I just havn't sat down & configured LIRC yet.

The laptop screen isn't too big so keyboard is always within arms reach.

I've been building an HTPC case out of wood for the last 4 months. LOL!
To put in the living room. i'll use remote with that as it will double as my DVD player.

The netbook with HD playback does sound nice. Do those have external video outputs?
