IE 8 starts opening up tabs on its own, freezing the computer

it happens about 1 time a day. if i am not at the desk when it happens, it freezes the computer. otherwise, i can end task before it gets too far.

i would like to try firefox, but the wife is a techtard, and refuses to try it. so i am stuck with IE (until i can get her on board).

I really don't want to reinstall windows, if i can avoid it.

any ideas?

I use AVG and windows defender, and have uninstalled mcafee entirely.

I don't know why people are such diamond heads about firefox but it isn't as obscure as it used to be and you just need to keep working on her.

Try installing spybot search & destroy & see if anything is trying to access the net through http.

It sounds to me like you have a trogen.

majestictwelve 10-23-2008 08:37 PM

tell her its the same as IE....well, pretty much it is. I LOVE firefox SO much more than IE. Someone once told me, for the people who dont know any different, to download firefox and make the icon appear as IE http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...es/biggrin.png

Yeah, he could be right about that. It's certainly worth checking.

There is no reason why you can't run both Firefox and IE on the same machine. The only technical difficulties I've had with Firefox were figuring out where the profile folders were for backup purposes, and the time that an update took place and my theme had a conflict with the favorites toolbar. If you take care of the geek stuff, she ought to be able to make the transition.

I love FireFTP for those file transfers, and abcTajpu for generating special characters. And AdBlock. And the Media player controls add-on. Oh, and tell her about the IE emulator, for those neanderthal websites that insist on IE.

I love Firefox!

otheloComRole 10-23-2008 08:55 PM

I use fireFTP to update my website.
I was surprised an Add-on could work so well.

Still running IE7 here. Don't have problems with it very often. Think I'll continue to use it until IE8 is officially released... or has it been.

Longwow 10-24-2008 12:53 AM

IE 8 is a BETA product. Not for use on production machine.

Sounds like virus problems to me.

Download Windows Defender and Malwarebytes antispware. http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Find and download either CCleaner or ATFCleaner to remove all temp files.

Then download and run in safe mode smitfraudfix

When someone complains to me about a slow PC 9 times out of 10 CCleaner & a defrag make a huge difference.

It's a great little free app.

i have done everything recommended except for the smitfraudfix.

everytime i try to reboot into safe mode, it freezes while trying to check the drivers.

but i am using firefox now. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/smile.png

Run it in standard mode. If that clears anything out try it again in safe mode.

i did.

i think the issue is related to the partitioned D drive. when i got the box from dell, it had norton ghost that had put the "backup" file on the D partition.

i would LOVE to get rid of that d partition and the files in there. it would give me another 16gb.

when it freezes while booting into safe mode, it freezes in the D directory.

mr.calisto 10-26-2008 12:09 AM

when it freezes while booting into safe mode, it freezes in the D directory. That doesn't make since. There are no drivers in your D directory. What exactly are you seeing that is bringing you to that idea.

Format! Format!

Yes, it is a pain, but sometimes ya gotta do it. However, you may be able to work it out a little easier with NTFS, especially at 32-bit.
