MS tries new marketing campaign
 

To try to "save their reputation," Microsoft is launching a multimillion dollar ad campaign (around $300m).

The latest, besides web ads, is "The Mojave Experiment." This one is actually kind of lame. They got 120 computer users, from Mac to Linux and Windows 2000/XP, in a room where they can pull their own "punk'd" episode. They're going to show off their newest version of Windows, code named "Mojave." The "trick" is they're actually showing Windows Vista. HA! They're so smart! I wonder who came up with that pathetic marketing attempt.

i am severely pissed about the cessation of security updates and support for XP. I can't believe that they are trying to FORCE everyone to use Vista. My computer is only a year old. I should not feel compelled to by an upgrade already. Is it my fault that their newest OS is a piece of crap? What would make them create a new OS that is not compatible with so much of the current software, anyway?

I am considering going Linux on my next purchase.

Maybe MS should rebrand Vista and start selling that in stores.

You expect them to support it forever? Can you get parts for you Edsel. Times change.

Vista is neither the dog you protray it as nor the miracle OS that Microsoft would like it to be.

The ads are lame but they do illustrate a real mindset out there. People forget that Xp went through the same thing back in 2001. I knew people that refused to use it, claimed it was buggy, software didn't work, no drivers, etc.

Yet I also recall how I installed Xp release candiate 2 ontop of a very unstable windows 98 and got the unit stable and used it without issues until Xp was released gold. Vista is ok. I wouldn't avoid it nor would I move heaven and earth to upgrade. If it comes on your computer you'll be fine in most cases.

i am not asking them to support a legacy system, or 3.1, for the love of God. I am asking them to support just one version back. That is all. If they want me to go to Vista, fix the bugs and make it work right THE FIRST TIME. I don't have time for computer headaches.

They should also drop a line to other programmers so that we don't have compatibility issues. Why should i have to go buy a whole new suite of software (for potential thousands) just to replace fairly new software that microsoft caused to be outdated?

microsoft is not being very "user friendly" with Vista.

Unless you have a dual core system Vista is not ok.
They were shipping it on pre core2duo dual core P4's with a GB of ram.
I think that is the main reason it got a bad rap.

The hardware just didn't have the guts to make it work as fast as XP.

I use an Nlited versions of XP only now.
Less ram used less crashing faster.

I have an unused copy of Vista from work I'm playing with.
I'll say this for Vista, it does better than XP when recognizing multimedia devices hands down.

But like I said unless you got at least 2gs of ram & a dual core cpu you are not going to be a happy camper.

I've started gravitating towards Linux lately.
I've identified what applications I use on a regular basis & the majority of them are open source (i'm cheap)
And i've actually gotten WOW to play with Wine.
I just havn't gotten video acceleration going yet.

I'll probably dual boot for a while just because i'll still need windows so I can talk friends & family through PC problems.
