And we're off! Clear skies. Ferrer came out and held to win the first set 6-2. Both guys are already on fire.

If David wins, I really don't know who to root for in the final. Somebody here mentioned that David winning the USO would be a testament to perseverance, and Andy still has time to win one. Although the second statement is debatable (you never know when you get the chance again) I really doubt David would have other chances.
Then again, Novak is rallying. If he wins, I am settled on who to root for.

What a difference a day (and no wind) makes!

Nole quickly to 5-0 in the 2nd set. Though he showed a surprising amount of frustration at 4-0, 0-40.

And they're playing "Vogue" on the changeover.

Anna Wintour is in the house.

I said it in other day's thread. I agree David probably won't have too many other chances. I just think him winning the first set, although slightly improved his chances and playing Andy in the final... he would have chances since Andy CAN be really shaky in the finals. It looks like though Novak is playing his best and David doesn't have much of a chance now.

Ferrer's best chance is to hit directly in the middle, deep and make it 25+ shots each rally. I don't think he has other choices if he wants to win it.

There hasn't been much of a real competition today and I can't say I'm surprised about it.

This getting ugly. David simply does not have the weapons.
He IS the fifth best player in the world. But that is it.

Would you take him over del Potro, Berdych or Tsonga on hard or grass? I wouldn't...

Well that depends, Berdych had a couple of awful months where the answer would've been Yes. Tomas will always have impasses.

And Tsonga is talented but erratic. I probably would take Ferrer over Tsonga. David would just make him play until he loses his patience.

Against Tsonga I would place some statistically significant amount of money on anybody. Does it surprise you when he loses? I am never surprised. Nor am I surprised when he wins.
Against Delpo, I would put some money too. As I would on Berdych. They can flame out.
But on the other hand, would you place money on any of those against Ferrer on clay?
My point is he has worked hard to reach #5. Yes, he can win, he can lose. But against the top 4 right now, he is simply not powerful enough.

On del Potro I would on others no.

Not even close today. Not very surprising as Jovak hits every single shot better than David.

Will they leave the women's doubles final on Armstrong?
Or let them play on Ashe in front of (at least some) fans?

Hradecka/Hlavackova are destined to be perennial bridesmaids.
