Nalbandian is out. Florent Serra has replaced him in the draw.

ETA: Nalbandian withdrew earlier in the day. The USTA didn't make it official until the evening. Officially no one has been named to replace Nalbandian. So it may be Florent Serra. And it may not be.

Sooo... why are there playing a single men's R2 match ahead of schedule?

10 matches played on Ashe so far. None of the losing players have won a set yet and they've only made it to 4 games in 4 sets of tennis (Williams lost 2 sets 6-4, Bogomolov one of them, Young one of them).

During the first week the best matches tend to be on the outer courts which is why Ashe is usually pretty empty. I've been watching all my coverage on USOpen Live. Not only do you get coverage on all the television courts but there's no Chrissie or Hannah! That alone is worth it. And it's free.

I don't know if it's available overseas though.

Yeah, unfortunately it is geoblocked.

TSN has outer court coverage online for Canadians.

This is why I don't buy Ashe tickets. Also, Rhyne Williams took Roddick to two 6-4 sets.

It is a USO tradition , they didn't do it last year but in 2010 Roddick played is R2 match on Wednesday night.

Yeah, I think Murray's match on Ashe is the only one I watched for any length of time. At least he did his best to try and give the crowd something competitive......I'm going to pretend that was the plan anyway Must be why they are having him back tonight.

I just think that the most prestigious show court should actually have the odd match that's worthy of the court (from a competitive standpoint). Clearly that's not the strategy though.

Maybe it will improve slightly from here on.

Mallory Burdette is up 6-2 4-2 on Hradecka. I am expecting big things from her. I actually picked Hradecka in SP before thinking twice. I had chosen Burdette as a loser for my YCWJ team simply because she's a low ranked WC. She destroyed her first round opponent so I thought I had better do a bit of research. Yes, she's ranked 252, but that's because she only started playing pro tournaments in July. She recently finished her third year at Stanford. She was the NCAA runner up, losing a tight match to Nicole Gibbs, another young American who shows promise. They won the doubles title together.

Burdette got a wildcard in Stanford and beat Keothovang in her first match, then went up 5-3 against Bartoli before losing 10 straight games.

She's very solidly built, think Kleybanova but not as tall. She has a ton of power off the ground. She moves forward and is great at net. She's not quick, but scrambles well and always does something intelligent when she gets to the ball. She employs the Radwanska method of refusing to back off the baseline and instead kneeling on court to block back deep shots. She'll often return hard serves to her forehand with a low slice that's pretty effective.

One area for improvement is her serve, which really isn't that fast. However, she places it excellently, which has worked well against the two-handed Hradecka. She won the first 17 points on serve. Still, most serves are in the 90s and I have to think other players will eventually take advantage. Like all broad shouldered players, fitness and foot speed will be extra important.

I think she could rocket up the rankings. One point of confusion: will she finish her college degree? The commentator said she hasn't turned pro yet and won't accept prize money here. Seems like it may be time to look into online classes.

I also thought of picking Hradecka, before remembering that Burdette won pretty easily in the first round and that it's safer to stay away from matches involving relative unknowns. Good write up, Charlie.

Kerber is also using that crouching 'rescue' type of shot from the baseline. Maybe it should be named after Aggie - don't know if anyone ever used it on a regular basis before her.

She has said that she's going to go back to Stanford this year which means they are absolutely going to be STACKED. But she's ranked high enough with this result to get into all of the GS qualies directly so hopefully Stanford will let her travel and play those for the experience because she could easily be top 75-100 in the next year or so. I saw her play in Lexington when she beat Rogowska and I pretty much agree with your assessment of her game. The serve is definitely the weak point and she can tend to get down on herself if her shots aren't landing but she's definitely got a huge upside.

Not only is the Tipsarevic-Rufin match highly entertaining on court; but Todd Martin and his announcing partner are also excellent
Many (most?) of the ESPN commentators could learn from them

and Rufin just went up 2 sets to love

I think it's a huge mistake to finish at Stanford, but they said she's still considering medical school instead of tennis.

I listened to Todd Martin earlier and he is excellent. He's self deprecating, insightful, and doesn't feel the need to announce the score or fill up every silence.
...
Checking in on Lepchenko-Rodionova. Lepchenko is a new fav after seeing her in Madrid this year. Someone said she's wearing an outfit from Venus' company. It's a tight white dress with asymmetrical black lines on it. I think the design is a little loud but the dress itself is super form flattering.

Lepchenko was up 4-0 but now it's 4-2.
...
The commentators metioned that Petrova destroyed Halep 1 and 1 on this court and looked very sharp while doing it. That's nice to hear.

Now I'm watching a bit of Tipsarevic-Rufin. I've never seen Rufin before. How tall is he!? He's the lankiest person I've ever seen, 90% limbs. He's like a spider.

Yes, I think Venus wore it in Charleston maybe? I can't quite remember - It definitely does Vavara's figure right!

She raised my eyebrow when she beat Penneta in the first round of the FO in 2011 ( I think)

Depending on how the rest of the year goes, I kinda think Burdette will change her mind about her senior year. She's probably crying about that $65,000 right about now, after the high of winning wore off.

Stanford will probably give her anything that she wants after this(if they are not doing it already)

I think Burdette's older sister was a top player at Standford, too, incidentally.

Tipsy has righted the Shipsy (so sorry) and taken the third set. There is hope in the SP for me yet!

Rufin, being limb-tastic, tall, super thin, and having curly brown hair, reminds me of an old rock star like Jagger or Steven Tyler. He has some odd motions. He takes massive swings. On his forehand he prepares very early and almost freezes in the ready position, as if posing for a stock photo, before exploding. He hits a two handed backhand but takes one hand off towards the end of his follow through.

Both players are wearing really neat shirts, Rufin from Adidas and Tipsarevic from Fila.
