Young is up against Mayer (the other Mayer) who is a clay courter so this is a very winnable match. On the other hand just last week he wasn't able to finish off Chardy in the second set tiebreak and promptly collapsed in the third. I think a similar thing might happen here, where Young goes up a set but then Mayer realizes that he really doesn't want to lose to this guy and pulls it out in 3.

Actually Leo Mayer has decent results (for a scrub) on hard courts and generally plays the US hardcourt swing.

I'm surprised that Sock (i.e. "future") did not get a WC into the main draw, and that Blake (i.e. "past") did instead.

I'm not. Blake has name recognition and therefore is a crowd draw. Sock does not (yet) have that. That's all it boils down to, really. The ticket factor.

Plus, you gotta think that this is a farewell tour for James. I doubt we'll see him play again after the Open.

True, but I still think the financial factor plays a major role in WCs like this. I've always liked Blake.... many people do. I'd rather see him than Jack Sock if that was my decision to make and that has to be a point of consideration for a tournament.

Y'all are forgetting that Jack Sock is a grand slam champion and James Blake is not.

Donald Young is up a break early in the third set against L Mayer. I heard if he breaks his epic losing streak he'll get a special treat of solid food tonight.
