I am so bummed
I was going to work as a volunteer marshal at Cincy again this year. My wife tore up her knee 3 weeks ago and I had had to cancel the trip.
It is an great tournament with both men and women combined and the draw is phenomenal for a non major.
If you can get there, I recommend it. the venue is tremendous

I'll be there either Saturday or Sunday for qualifying and then probably on Tuesday as well so I'll stage a Nelsus-esque take over of the thread with reports from those days.

Glad to hear past attendees like this event so much. I have a good friend here originally from the Cincy area, who has tried to talk me into going a few times. Another TATeur has also brought it up.

I'm not sure if I can get over my "Mason, OH? In AUGUST?!" humidiphobia, though.

Would I be fooling myself that the weather in, say, Montreal, would be any cooler or less humid?

I'm pretty sure Montreal would be several degrees (even Celsius) cooler. Can't say about humidithy, though.

It's not so bad. Evening sessions are perfect summer nights. The facilities have just been upgraded, and there's shade. It's an amazing tournament. You get to see all the top players in an intimate setting, many playing on general-admission courts. At least one of the top 4 men have made the final nearly every year for the past 7 or 8.

I'm going to make sure of it Kandi, that's why I'm going for qualifying just in case they don't make it to the main draw for when I'm there later in the week.

I hope to attend next year. Of course, I also hope to win Powerball, but I think Cincy is more realistic.

Nadal Drops Out of Cincinnati With Bad Knee

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

CINCINNATI (AP) — Rafael Nadal dropped out of the Western & Southern Open on Thursday because of a knee problem that also forced him to miss the Olympics.

Nadal pulled out of the London Olympics because of a sore left knee, missing the chance to be Spain's flag bearer in the opening ceremony.

He won the French Open for a record seventh time at the start of the season, but has been bothered by a problem with the tendon in the knee for weeks. He lost in the second round at Wimbledon and hasn't played since then, dropping out of the Olympics and the Rogers Cup this week.

The Masters event in suburban Mason begins on Sunday. Nadal will be the only man ranked in the Top 10 who's not in the tournament.

"Hi all, another message to announce something that definitely doesn't make me happy but unfortunately I won't be competing at the tournament in Cincinnati next week," Nadal posted on his Facebook page Thursday. "I am still not ready to play. I have many fans in Cincy and unforgettable moments such as 2008. I am continuing with my recup (recovery) and practice. Thanks."

Nadal will be the only man currently ranked in the ATP's top 10 to miss the tournament. Gold medalist Serena Williams leads the women's field that includes nine of the top 10 WTA players.

Nadal has been one of the most popular players at the Cincinnati tournament, drawing large crowds to his matches.

"We're certainly disappointed that Rafa won't be able to play in Cincinnati this year," tournament director Vince Cicero said. "He's one of the great competitors in the sport and he will be sorely missed."

That's too bad. He's never played his best there - it's the only Masters where he's yet to reach the final - but I believe it was Cincy whete he became #1 for the first time, in 2008. Fed had lost to Karlovic in R16, and all Rafa needed to do was reach semi.

Jo confirms he walked into a fire hydrant and wasn't in a fender bender. Original is in French.
Basically says that he walked into the hydrant and required eight stitches and will have to rest for six days. Bing translation is hi-larious.

Original French

Bing Translation.

Jo Wilfried Tsonga must renounce playing the Cincinnati tournament, fault an unfortunate accident on Thursday in the streets of Toronto. Jo has of being ask 8 points of sutures on the right knee and must observe a rest period of 10 days according to Canadian doctors.

He met just a mouth to fire (fire hydrant) walking in the street and it therefore opened the knee. Its participation in the US Open is not questioned.

I usually wait till finals weekend, but I could zip over there for a day early in the week. It's not that far, and I'd love to check out the early rounds one of these days.
Sounds like a plan.

I've tended to stay away from finals matches (especially when travelling, when we had actual tournaments here in Philly it was different), because of the whole getting trapped up in potential less-than-exciting matches. That's why first weekend and Monday of Indian Wells makes for a great experience - good mix up of matches, some fun doubles, and everyones still around, so the practice courts make for great entertainment.

But I can certainly make it mid-to-late week, and I am sure we'd get to see some great tennis.
