Natural talent, training hard, honing his technique, mastering point strategy -- all are irrelevant when it comes to Gasquet. All of his problems are mental, and it really is a shame. Similar to Ivanovic. |

Yes but it is his mental problems that are holding him back far more than any technical issues he might need improvement upon. Good idea to see is to watch him play someone like Ferrer (who you think is a pusher.. ) Ferrer completely overwhelms him with pace and speed. He pushes him back so much that he can't recover in rallies anymore. Ferrer beats him on regular basis like 6-2, 6-3. Today, he could not handle pace of Mayer at all. That's technical. He can not hit aggressive returns on second serves at all, he does not even slice bh often.. he goes back far and returns from there almost every time and when a player like Mayer who hits very flat and plays on baseline is on his game, Richard is usually in trouble and has little to show. This is not mental, this is technical weakness. |
