How does Azarenka gets Court 1 over a 4 time winner, who is on Court 2? Understand Kvitova on Centre as she is the defending champion.

Doesn't the past winner always get the first match on Centre on one of the two opening days, Patrick?

I know Serena has been placed on lower court than she probably deserved in some of previous years, but this year she is number 6, while Vika is number 2, so it makes sense.

I thought this could happen, what with Petra not where she was this time last year, the occasion, and a tricky opponent.

And to answer the question, I went ahead and looked since I was curious. I went through all of the open era women's Wimbledon winners, and there was one.... Graf in 1994 was the defending champ and lost in the first round.

For the Men's side, Hewitt actually lost as defending champ in the first round in 2003.

(Note, I was looking only at Wimbledon here)

Looks like Tomic's return to Wimbledon is going to be a rather short one. He's down 2 sets to 1 and a break in the 4th to legend-killer Goffin. In other potential upsets which kinda aren't at all F-Lo is also down 2 sets to 1 to Nieminen.

McHale just won !!!!! 10-8 in the third !!!! and MAhut toooooooooo

McHale eventually wins, 10-8 in the 3rd. That was an excellent battle between 2 not dissimilar players. Both good movers; McHale with more consistency of shot, Konta hitting the slightly flatter more spectacular winners.

I would definitely say this counts as an upset: Lopez is a good grass court player, and has a better record on this surface than Nieminen.
