Does it make me a bad person that I giggled when I saw that Huber/Raymond lost?
No, not even slightly. I did too. Liezel and Lisa planned their clay season about as badly as they possibly could have. (i.e. not playing for a month on their worst surface so they had almost no prep time whatsoever.)

Huh. Looks like AO 2012 was Putintseva's last tournament as a junior?

http://www.itftennis.com/juniors/pla...erid=100138876

(On a tangent, nice to see Ons Jabeur making finals and SFs on the ITF circuit:

Russians give up on their young players very quickly indeed...

I hadn't followed junior rankings for the while. It has been a long time since American girl was ranked #1 (who was last?). Serena/Venus have been unusually unsuccessful in generating a wave of really good follow up players in US. Maybe that's about to change.

Kind of continuing our discussion from the Day 7 thread Serena and Venus were not totally involved with the USTA system and Richard and Oracene weren't taking on students. Taylor on the other hand is part of the system and I may be wrong but I think she's one of the best they've produced. I'm hoping that her fitness issues are being resolved otherwise we're going back to the days when women players were denigrated by male players as out of shape lumbering non athletes. Any long term fan/follower of Lindsay Davenport is familiar with that mindset.

The other USTA juniors I've seen touted as up and coming, Lauren Davis comes to mind, are small in stature. The European women who are dominating now are tall like Kvitova. The shorter women like Sara Errani are very very fit. I hope that the up and coming US women work on their fitness. It will help.

I know, but that's not how follow-up wave of players is produced anyway. It's produced when talented boys/girls (or their parents, I guess) get inspired by a huge success of their compatriot and want to be like them.

Even though Taylor is the #1 seed, I don't even slightly expect her to win the title. The #2 seed, Annika Beck, has been winning $25K's in Europe and she is already almost top 150. Plus she had MP against Fes champ Bertens in the first round of main draw qualies. I actually didn't even know she could still play juniors but if she's taking it seriously I'd be shocked if she didn't win it.

The final 16's in the junior single feature 6 Americans, 3 Canadians and 3 Brazilians. Canadian Carol Zhao lost a very tight match (67(1) 76(5) 64) to top seed Taylor Townsend, or there could have been four Canadians.
