Default 2012 ATP CHAMPIONS TOUR
The Delray Beach International Tennis Championships
City: Delray Beach, Florida
Dates: February 24-28, 2012

Venue: The Delray Beach Stadium and Tennis Centre
Director: Mark S. Baron
Surface: Outdoor Hard Court (Plexipave)
Website: www.yellowtennisball.com

As a fantabulous beachfront community in the United States, the charismatic City of Delray Beach is affectionately known as the “Village by the Sea”. Its two miles of beachfront have been called one of the best beaches in the U.S., attracting beach-goers to its stunning Atlantic coastline. Delray Beach was recently voted a “Top-10 Best Tennis Town” by the USTA.

The 8,200-seat Delray Beach Tennis Stadium & Tennis Center has hosted the International Tennis Championships’ ATP World Tour event for more than a decade, boasting past champions and noteworthy contenders including Del Potro, Roddick, Agassi, Hewitt, Blake, Isner, Tipsarevic, Baghdatis, the Bryan Brothers, Haas, Fish, Nishikori and more. In 2011 the event expanded by hosting the world’s only 10-day ATP 'Super Event' featuring tennis legends past and present from both the ATP World Tour and ATP Champions Tour.

The 2012 opening night, will kick off with an electrifying match between tennis greats Pat Cash and Jimmy Arias at 7:00pm. At 9:00pm the featured match will pit rival foes Ivan Lendl and Mats Wilander as they rekindle epic grand slam battles, including Wilander’s 5-set win at the 1988 U.S. Open that vaulted the Swede to #1 in the world. Ironically, their last ATP World Tour match against each other was in 1994 in Coral Springs at America’s Red Clay Tennis Championship, now the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships.

During the ten days of animated action on-court and revelry throughout the grounds, the Delray Beach ITC hosts more than 20 parties on-site and concerts on the tournament’s Main Stage making it one of the most vibrant and culturally rich events in tennis. The ITC also proudly boasts the “VolleyGirls”, a team of spokeswomen for the tournament, spreading cheer to all who visit.

Announced players for 2012:
Ivan Lendl, Michael Chang, Mats Wilander, Pat Cash, Aaron Krickstein, Mikael Pernfors, Jimmy Arias, Johan Kriek.

Chang/Lendl Ready To Roll Back The Years In Delray Beach

Michael Chang and Ivan Lendl will compete in an ATP Champions Tour tournament together for the first time in Delray Beach, starting on Friday, with the chance to resume another of the most fascinating rivalries in tennis.

It is 23 years since a 17-year-old Chang out-foxed the all-conquering World No.1 Lendl in the fourth round of the French Open before going on to beat Stefan Edberg in the final and win the most unlikely of titles at Roland Garros.

That triumph over Lendl, along with the image of Chang hitting an underarm serve against his revered opponent, are recollections that will stay with anyone who witnessed them. For Chang, who plays his first round-robin match in Delray on Friday against Carlos Moya, they are fond memories, and he suprisingly revealed that he had even been able to share them with his vanquished opponent. more -- http://www.atpchampionstour.com/

Moya Targets Clash Against Boyhood Idol In Delray Final

Carlos Moya qualified for his sixth consecutive ATP Champions Tour Final in Delray Beach on Sunday, and afterwards expressed his delight at the prospect of possibly meeting his boyhood hero Ivan Lendl in Tuesday’s final.

Moya confirmed his place with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over American Aaron Krickstein on Sunday evening, and the Spaniard must now await the result of tomorrow’s meeting between Mikael Pernfors and Johan Kriek to discover whether he will achieve his dream of playing against eight-time Grand Slam Champion Lendl. Lendl’s final hopes were dealt a blow in a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Johan Kriek in his final round-robin match on Sunday.

“Lendl is one of the all time greats, and he made history,” said Moya. “ This is what makes the Champions Tour unique, being able to bridge the generations. It is a dream for me that I might have the chance to play my idols like Lendl and hopefully McEnroe as well one day. It’s amazing to look up to them for so long and then to be on the same court with them. I have so many memories of watching him when I was a kid and I have so much respect for what he did and everything he achieved. He changed the game.”

Moya also gave some insight into how Lendl’s relationship with current World Number Four Andy Murray might help the Briton to take the next step in his career.

“Lendl’s partnership with Murray is very interesting,” he said. “It’s not the same as my relationship with Rafa, as I have never officially coached him, but I have tried to help him and answer any questions he has, and that voice of experience can be very important for young players. There is no doubt that Murray has the ability to win a Slam, it’s just that doubt over whether he is mentally good enough. But that is where Lendl can help, because he’s been in that exact situation of waiting and waiting for his first Grand Slam. I think Ivan has such a winning mentality that that will only help Murray, because that’s exactly what he needs to develop.”

Lendl had the chance to confirm his place in the Delray Beach final on Saturday, but suffered a surprise defeat to South African-born American Kriek, a man who has overcome considerable adversity to be able to make a comeback to Champions Tour tennis.

“I had a 12 hour operation three years ago to remove a tumor in my back,” said Kriek, a two-time Australian Open winner. “It was a tumour that was affecting my whole nervous system so I was told I might not walk again, let alone play tennis, so boy do I feel like a lucky guy.”

Also on Tuesday, Michael Chang notched up his first victory of the tournament over Pat Cash 6-4, 6-3, giving himself a chance of reaching Tuesday’s 3rd/4th place play-off match. Meanwhile, Mikael Pernfors overcame wind-swept conditions to complete a 4-6, 6-2, 10-5 (Champions’ Tie Break) win over American Jimmy Arias.
