He set the bar, obliterated it, then raised it again so that the next generation can smash through it. There should be a formal coronation ceremony at IW or Miami, where the crumpled racquet frame is handed over and Baghdatis is officially sworn in. We'll need an intermission during the inevitable 4.5 hour final between Novak and Rafa anyway.

Gonzo was one of my favorites - love his smile and his forehand. I will miss him.

His loss to Soderling in the FO semi-final was heartbreaking for me.

Especially loved Nalby's tribute.

Very lovely tribute to Gonzo. It's hard to believe it was 5 years ago he was at the top of his game and now he's gone. Still, a very stellar career and certainly made tennis very interesting.

Oh man, that title thread is scary, I thought something bad happened to him.

Sucks about the injures, but this isn't a big surprise. I still remember first year I was watching him and his go for broke game in the early stages of his career.. he did manage to control his game so much better later on and I think fulfilled most of his potential.

Although I hate what he did to James in the '08 Olympics, I always liked his playing style. I'm glad I got to see a couple minutes of his last slam match in person against Dr. Ivo at the USO.

I was a fan until I saw him play doubles at IW in 2009. Then I realized what his antics do to an opposing player (in this case, Travis Parrott) to throw off an opponents game. Lost a lot of respect for Gonzo that day.

Still, he was entertaining in his day, and I wish him a happy retirement.
