Mid-day report from Memphis (pictures TK):

~9:30 am Arrive at racquet club. Inordinately amused to see row of reserved parking for past winners (Roddick, Rybarikova, Arvidsson, Querrey, and Gilbert); only car present is Arvidsson's.

Buy chair seat for day session ($35). Trivia bit: no seat in stadium is more than 62 feet from court. When I get to my seat, Melzer and Istomin are practicing.

~ 10 a.m. chair is Anna Ferrara. Arvidsson wins toss, elects to receive, and promptly hits everything long the first two games. Parmentier weapons equally unreliable, however (and her body language pretty poor), so set evens out quickly. Arvidsson looks more fit than two years ago, but doesn't seem to go after balls you'd see a better player chasing down.

After 9 games, I've had enough and head over to Grandstand. The back row (where one can follow Court 1 at the same time, and Kubot-Levine is sounding pretty feisty) is full, so I opt for row 4 instead, which puts me within a few feet of Hradecka's coach and a friend (I think another Czech player, but I can't remember the name at the moment). Hradecka kit hideous and she's wearing an ankle brace, but she's hitting with a good deal of power, which is nice to see after all the moonballs on Stadium. Coach making copious notes in moleskine notebook between points, and goes to her after Tsurenko takes lead. Kubot gets called for time violation and Hradecka should've been several times over.

At end of second set, I consider moving over to Court 1, but the stands already look full, and I see that Parmentier has bagelled Arvidsson, so I head to the bar -- which is streaming all three matches on the tvs behind the bar. So here I am with my Manhattan and chicken salad, waiting for Melzer/Istomin. :-)

(I would also really like to catch Benneteau v. Petzschner, which is on Court 1 -- please wish me luck! [Radek's playing on Stadium, but against Bobby Reynolds, whose histrionics I'd just as soon miss if I have a choice.])

I take it back -- caught second set of Reynolds vs. Stepanek, because the vibe on Court 1 was getting too ugly. Bobby not in same league as Radek, but showed some nice touch at the net. Radek thought he'd served an ace on match point, but the chair umpire belatedly called "let" when Radek was mid-fistpump and already walking toward the net. There was a reallllly long stare between them before Radek went back to serve it out.

Court 1 was only a third full for Julien v. Phillipp (and the handful of fans who were vocal or clappy were for Phillipp), and as the match wore on, more people bailed (eventually including me). Both players were majorly displeased with the linecalling within a few games in, repeatedly rolling their eyes and gesturing and complaining to the chair, and at one point Julien screamed, "Nooooo! Nooooo!" The chatter from Grandstand (Oudin/Hampton were one of the teams playing dubs) was so bad that Phillipp stopped serve to complain, and on and on and on. Not a good experience.

Melzer v. Istomin was filled both with lots of errors and a decent quantity of winners. If I had to sum up, Denis was more precise but Jurgen was more aggressive (crowd was slightly pro-Melzer from what I could tell, but applauded good shots by both players), and the aggressive net play paid off in the 3rd set tiebreak. (Denis owned the one in the first set.) I really liked watching Istomin play -- he hustles after every point (there were a couple where he nearly ended up in half-splits); seemed a little stiff in the legs second half after he slipped (strain? cramp?), but nonetheless scrambling after everything; it was nice to see him and Jurgen deliberately moving each other around the court (didn't get that sense so much with the other matches I caught today).

How steep Roddick's fall has been. I'm not sure he'll stick around for 2013 if he keeps up these results.

I think his perisitent state of injury is contributing to these losses, but there is definitely a fall off.

Back in 2009, he told Donald Dell that he would retire if he ever fell out of the Top 15. Asked about that in 2010, he said that was a private, off the record remark that never should have been reprinted, but he did add...

“I don’t think I’m the kind of guy that’s gonna stay on the tour just to be on tour. Just to exist. As long as I feel like I can keep winning tennis tournaments - I’ve won two this year - as long as I feel like I can enter a tournament to win a tournament then I love playing. I feel pretty lucky to play. But I don’t think I’ll stay and do the retirement tour, so to speak.”
