Slava means "glory" in Russian. On the flipside, it's also a common men's name.

Julien Benneteau cut his finger in a Japanese restaurant and has to have surgery. As we know, he pulled out of AO

(Julien's doubles partner is Nico Mahut)

Bartoli out for six weeks after suffering calf tear January 19, 2011 Marion Bartoli will be off the court for six weeks after suffering a calf tear during her match against Vesna Manasieva in the second round of the Australian Open. Bartoli, who did not drop a game in her opening match, lost 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 after a strong start.

"It felt like an explosion inside my muscle when I pushed off at one point," she said. "After that, it was very complicated because I couldn't use my right leg.

"I can't take a plane now because it's too swollen. I have to stay here for three days."

"The doctors asked me how I had managed to play another hour and a half. But I'm a competitor. I was up a set, it's not easy to give up. It might not have been the best decision to take."
This is from the ticker.

I watched the last two sets of that match and thought it was very strange. I watched all of her first round match and she was in incredible form. She also had very "happy feet," bouncing around constantly between points. This match she was totally still between points. What a bummer for her.

Verdasco apparently has a broken bone in his foot, since Kooyong. Wants to avoid surgery

(from Spanish people on Twitter)
Fernando Verdasco, playing with a broken bone in his left ankle, could be facing surgery after a fourth-round loss to Tomas Berdych at the Australian Open on Sunday. "The operating room is the last option," Verdasco assured. "I have to talk to Dr. Angel Cotorro to see what decision I can make about the ankle, to see what I can do; whether to keep playing or stop to have the surgery to remove the broken bone. This is a last resort, because I will miss several tournaments if I have the surgery.".

Ivan Ljubicic retires from his match against Sergei Bubka in Dubai with a right leg injury and says he’s unsure about his status for Indian Wells, where he is the defending champion. "I don't exactly know what it is—I've never had anything similar to this before," he said. "I can't play. I can't serve because I use the right leg to push off. And so I have no choice. I shall go [to Indian Wells] no matter what. Hopefully I will be healthy enough to try to defend my title.

Default Injury and Illness - 2011
I didn't see a specific thread for this and thought it is rampant enough to warrant its own thread.

Other than the known Serena foot injury, here's some of the first victims of the season:

http://www.tennis.com/articles/templ...9509&zoneid=25
Injury and illness have struck several women during the first week of the season. Daniela Hantuchova is likely to withdraw from Brisbane with an achilles tendon tear, and Flavia Pennetta has pulled out with a stomach bug. Yaroslava Shevdova has pulled out of Hopman Cup with a knee injury, while Anastasija Sevastova is out of Auckland with illness.

From Cronin's Twitter page:

dougrobson Saw F. Gonzalez at DC presser. Showed small 1" scar on his hip. Been hitting for a few weeks. Looks fit. Hopes to return before RG.

From Cronin's Twitter page:
I'm not getting my hopes up but I hope he's able to have a good comeback. I've really missed him (and his gorgeous eyes).

Vania's got a Tweet up about Shvedova:

Bad news: Slava is injured and it doesn't look promising for AO....talks of surgery!!
Shame for their sake..the two of them have become one of the best doubles pairings on the Tour.

Without the Williams Sisters, they were probably the favorite to win the doubles at Australian Open(and their 3rd Slam in a row)

I guess when the alternative is Yaro, Slava doesn't sound all that bad.

I'd take Yaros in a heartbeat.

We should have a contest for her nickname; my pony:
Y-slav

I'm in the minority, but I tend to call Shvedova "Yari"; sort of like how I refer to Wickmayer as Nina.
