We have great seats, in the shade, on Grandstand. With a line up of Delpo, Peng/Goerges (who I have some great photos of), and Lisicki. Would be very easy to spend the day here.

I just had a chance to look at this schedule. McHale vs Kirilenko is the night session? Hilarious.

I laughed too until I looked at the other options. You can't have Maria every night for the sake of the night workers' ears!

Just turned to Safarova/Niculescu with Niculescu serving up 2-0. These one could be a BARNBURNER. I only saw three points and they were all awesome. Safarova is absolutely wailing on the ball and Niculescu is hurling herself around court in an awesome display of defense. So far Niculescu's wackadoodle spins have thrown off Lucie and her giganto strokes but I'm expecting her to pull it out and maybe even get to the quarters.

She's serving at 0-3 though, so she better pull it together fairly soon.

I feel like Medina Garrigues is the perfect 3rd round opponent for Zvonareva. She's going to have a bunch of tough deuce games without being in much danger of losing.

Medina Garrigues is solid on every shot, but Vera 2.0 can actually hurt you with every shot. They're both all court players. Vera is just better.

I checked out the h2h to see if I was right. 3-1 Vera, all three wins being drubbings. The loss was a 6-3 3-0 retirement and I don't know the story there. They haven't played since 2008, so I imagine the new Vera will only win more easily. We'll see!

I'm actually tickled by the women's schedule today. On the men's side, I don't like that the first round is spread of three days without one of them being Sunday. It's too weird that some men are playing their first match late Wednesday when some women play their third the next morning.

Women would still be in the second round on Thursday, but yeah, it is still odd to have different rounds happening on the same day.

I wouldn't say it's out of good matches, but the halves are imbalanced (at least from the "American audience" point of view). Not much of interest today, but Ana/Sloane, Serena/Vika, and Woz/Vania all tomorrow.

Of course, if the Americans lose all those matches, then they're f****d.

I am very surprised Niculescu has now won the first 7 games against Safarova. With Safarova's big strokes I would expect her to struggle with wind and slicey dicey players, but not like this. I checked out the match stats, and so far Safarova is winning 0% of her second serve points!!! (0 for 10)

The game I watched Niculescu was totally fired up and far faster than I remember her. Also, anytime I've seen her play she's only sliced her forehand. I saw her hit a few good topspin forehands (turns out it's two handed).

It definitely hurt that Clijsters couldn't play and Li and Kvitova totally crapped out. All the slam winners out adds a rain cloud to the draw. Then Bartoli and A Rad had to go and lose to inspired opponents.

It's certainly been excellent for American women, though!

She definitely didn't have the game to make slam finals in the days when she was crying a lot. Her serve is much bigger now. I think she's always had excellent groundies, but preferred to go mostly cross court. Now when her opponent changes direction down the line, instead of hitting a defensive shot cross court she blasts it right back down the line. No matter how often she does it in a match it's so strange that her opponent is always caught a bit off guard. She was always a great mover too, but I think her explosive movement must have improved. She has to be one of, if not the best, movers on tour.
