My usual mantra: rumors of Andy's demise are extremely premature. He was playing top tier tennis at the beginning of the year, and there's no reason he couldn't be again. His big mistake this year was taking off that huge chunk of time between Miami and Queen's Club; he lost a huge amount of momentum, followed by confidence. If I were him, I wouldn't do that again. |

Respectfully disagree. I will always believe Andy's "downfall" was trying to adopt Andre's late-career attitude early in his career, choosing to build a marketable image over doing whatever it takes to win. It's an admirable model, but it just doesn't work for everyone. does this "marketable image" includes the regular insult-baiting foul treatments and tirades of umpires and judges? and actually I don't think that he has that much endorsements as an American, he could do a lot better with all that's in the US -not to mention that he is actually managed by the French (Lagardére) and his main sponsor Lacoste is a French company..... Also, I think he want to win *too much*, in the sense that it clouds his tactical judgement at times, instead of putting the breaks and maneuver he just goes gung-ho, throwing the kitchen sink and everything at his opponents. |

If by washed up we mean not able to win a slam, this thread should have started a few years ago. Otherwise he won't be washed up until he retires because he will stick around in the top 7-10 range. |

Nope, I mean that I think it is a glimpse into the real Andy that he works hard to suppress in public, but it comes out when he's really frustrated. Define "regular". I will always believe Andy's "downfall" was trying to adopt Andre's late-career attitude early in his career, choosing to build a marketable image over doing whatever it takes to win. It's an admirable model, but it just doesn't work for everyone and it doesn't match what you are saying just above. I don't believe Roddick tried to build a marketable image like Agassi because if he did he wouldn't have these regular, offputting outbursts in front of worldwide cameras. His reputation is starting to be more about the way he regularly treats/berates line judges, umpires, ball kids, or fellow players he deems "inferior" [in tennis terms] (Tipsarevic, remember Tsonga at the AO some years back? etc..). and for someone who is American and who supposedly is following Agassi's handbook choosing French endorsers (Babo lat, Lacoste) and management (Lagardère) is sure way to crack the US market like Agassi did. ha and by regular I mean: belonging to a religious order |

I can't believe that some of you think Andy will never win a slam again! Per Sharapova, Agassi, Sampras and his last US Open, Serena and a host of others...I've learned to never count anyone out until they officially retire. Heck, even frowny face may win another slam!
Andy may need....attitude adjustments..but he is certainly capable of playing slam worthy tennis...it just remains to be seen if he will. Certainly he will win another before Gael wins his first |
