3. Women's Singles - 1st Round
Jarmila Groth (AUS) v. Maria Sharapova (RUS)[14]
I give Maria a 10% of losing this match, a 30% chance of losing to Woz in the 4th round, and a 60% chance of making the final.

I do love a good underdog, though. Go Go Gadget Groth!

Wouldn't it be GREAT if Wozniacki lost to Gullickson? That will show Melanie "Big Mouth" Oudin!

Coco Vandeweghe

When did she merit a place on the Grandstand? Over Sister B?

She had a good event this summer. Beat Bepa, I think. Plus, I think her family is really tight with the USTA? Is that correct? In other words, I think it's typical incestuous tennis politics.

Vandeweghe is definitely going to win, so they want her to do it on a TV court. Understandable.

Are you betting on Lisicki still not being 100%? You might be right...

She spent most of the summer being followed by an ambulance, so...

I was tempted to take Coco in the pool. But then I remembered what Tursunov did to me a few years ago when he was supposed to have only one functioning arm. Of course he won in straights when I picked against him.

I saw Feliciano Lopez practicing with Querrey on Friday on the grandstand, and he also looks like he might be injured. Both calves were heavily taped, and he's carrying more weight than normal. He's off my pick list, for sure.

Krishna, you should post this in the Day2 picks thread so that everyone knows what you saw.....

I definitely wouldn't pick him if he looked that bad!

I would, but watching practices during qualies week is my only advantage in the pool. I'm already out on the women's side, so I need all the help I can get. There, I can tell you that Safarova looked really fit on Saturday. She was hitting all her shots and her groundstrokes looked fantastic. (Bartoli, the exact opposite of that.)

Kuznetsova looks very sluggish out there. But just the same, her shot placement is lovely!
