Looks like Philipp has his usual get to the third round and go home match. My only hope is that the top half of the draw plays last, and that Simon beats Donald. That could set up an outer court match on Friday that I would drag a lot of TATeurs with me to watch think would be fun.

Damn it! In Andy Murray's "who will I draw in R1" twitter contest, I nearly went with my guy Lukas Lacko. Why did I abandon him now?

Fed should have a "smooth" run to the finals once again. Top half seems much harder with Nadal, Murray, and Berdych.

I like Fish's chances of a deep run in his quarter too.

Fish vs. Baghdatis in third round, Nole in fourth round, possibly Roddick in the QFs. All winnable, I think.

With the US playing 3 days of 1st round, there would also be the possibility that Rafa/PEHK would play Saturday Tailgate day. Sadly, they would likely have that match on Ashe, and while I have a Saturday Ashe ticket, I really don't like watching matches in there. That's why I would much prefer a Kohli/Simon Friday match.

Incidentally, Simon was one half of my all time favorite in person mens match in all my years of going to matches, so I'd be very happy to see the two of them play.

Which Simon match was that?

Simon/DelPo, 3rd round, USO 2008. Scotty and I sat there riveted for 3 and a half hours of breathtaking 5 set tennis, never getting out of our seats (neither did anyone else in the crowd after the first set, I believe - no one could get in). Their styles were complete contrasts, which made it very interesting, and both played their hearts out.

Was that on the Grandstand? I think I remember it.

Yes it was, Megan. Which made it even better. Think that is my favorite court in the entire complex.

Hadn't thought about this- but, this is an excellent point. You can get some real top players on this court, but this court does feel quite more intimate and close up than Armstrong and obviously Ashe.

Yes. Grandstand absolutely rocks. Especially during the day. At night, it can be different. Gulbis/Robredo was a lot of fun. But when it's two unknown, non-American women, there can very well be only 10 people in the entire stadium. It's too exposed. Too isolating. Bizarre feeling.

Sometimes late at night on Armstrong can be really great when there isn't an American playing and fans who don't know any better are somewhere else. That scenario got me my photo op with Snezana 3 years ago (Jankovic vs. Bammer). And then there was Hewitt/Calleri, where I left with a whole new appreciation for both men--and the Argentine/Aussie rivalry. We hung out with the Argentines.

At night, Armstrong can be very intimate. You almost feel like you're indoors. I just can't explain it. But during the day, or when there's an American on the court, just forget it. It's not much fun at all.

What?? Starting from the third round he could face Hewitt, then Melzer, then Soderling. That's potentially bumpy.

Hewitt: he has to be on a VERY good day whilst Federer has to suck. With the way both have been playing, highly unlikely.

Melzer: non-factor

Soderling: could be interesting, but what has Soderling done since Wimbledon? (I honestly don't know)

Hardest draw is Murray's.

Soderling hadn't done much before the French Open either. But I agree with you that I feel more confident about Federer's chances now than earlier in the year because he seems to be moving much better. Robbie Koenig, commentating on one of the matches in Cincy, said something like, we all know how well Roger moves on his forehand side! And I thought it was common knowledge that his movement is the worst when he's pushed to the forehand side. I guess that shows that he's moving better than he usually does (or at least, than earlier this season).
