She's ranked 315, so I kind of doubt it, unless she has protected ranking. And since the lowest ranked Qualy seed is #84, that means a lot of women must have taken a pass on playing qualifiers here. |

Did anyone post about Ana vs. the Rogers Cup? If not, I'm surprised. Dry would love the story.
Ivanovic turns down wild card at Rogers Cup Aug 12, 3:22 pm EDT MONTREAL (AP)—Ana Ivanovic declined a wild-card entry into the main draw of the Rogers Cup next week because of a flap with the tournament director. In a posting on her website, Ivanovic said her request for a wild card was turned down weeks ago. Tournament director Eugene Lapierre offered her direct entry into the Montreal tournament on Tuesday, but she refused it. Ivanovic, whose first major victory came in Montreal in 2006, said she declined because of comments made by Lapierre to a Montreal newspaper. Lapierre said the 62nd-ranked player didn’t deserve a wild card and hoped to leave a spot open for a Canadian player. “I would have loved to play Montreal but I was quite hurt by the comments of Mr. Lapierre,” Ivanovic wrote. The 2008 French Open winner added that even without a wild card, she would have been happy to play in the qualifying tournament “but I felt that they kind of stepped over the line with this interview, making public our correspondence and even misrepresenting it. Unfortunately, I don’t feel welcome at the tournament.” Lapierre issued a statement saying the former No. 1 player was always welcome at the Rogers Cup. On Thursday, Ivanovic advanced to the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Open with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Elena Vesnina. http://sports.yahoo.com/tennis/news?...treal-ivanovic |

I don't get what comments offended her. That she hasn't had good results lately? That she would be extravagantly catered to during the quallies? Maybe I read the wrong statements from the tournament, but this sounds pouty. She could just say "I think I deserve better than quallies so I'm not playing."
Ok, maybe this: "It’s probably the best thing that could happen to her since she needs to play to find her confidence and rise in the rankings before the US Open." is a little condescending... but true! |

I like: “If I were her coach, I would force her to play qualies.” And, as recently as Tuesday: "We’re looking at it and there should be developments soon.” And Ana: “I don’t think his comments were necessary, and they contradicted everything he had told my management previously: that I was not getting a wild card because I am not Canadian.” |

I'm tiring of all this Ana drama. How did her request for a WC initially become public anyway? If she mentioned it first, then she let the cat out of the bag and should stop whining. If the tourney director spoke out, then it was his fault.
Anyway, tennis is a sport, you win you succeed, you lose, your ranking falls. Ana just needs to shut up and find her game again if she wants any respect from objective tennis fans. |

I think that's all Ana's saying. The tourney director should have kept the matter private. The end. I don't see where there is that much drama. |

You don't think her statement yesterday just prolonged the discussion? She could have taken the high road and simply said her pre-open plans are now in place with a WC from New Haven so will not be able to play Montreal. Instead she went for the tit-for-tat route and make herself look worse because no one cares about a tournament director from Canada. |

I think she was within her rights. They waited and waited until their draw fell apart. Even Tuesday, they were not ready yet. Besides, Ana could use a chip on her shoulder. If Ana was within her rights to speak up then surely the tourney director was within his rights to wait until the last minute to offer up a WC. I do agree with you that she could use a chip on her shoulder. |

I've forgotten if Venus is actually playing at this point, but if MelO can get past a qualifier, she'll get her first crack at a Williams sister. Juh-rama! Drooling. |
