Has there ever been a GS with a worse information policy? The qualifying has already started but still no word on two WCs for men's and women's singles each. That's really annoying. The final Australian Open wildcards were announced today, with Victorians Jarmila Groth and Marinko Matosevic both granted main draw berths. Jarmila Groth had a promising beginning to 2009 – she reached the round of 32 at the French Open and Eastbourne, and reached the second round of Wimbledon before being derailed by eventual champion Serena Williams. Groth achieved a career high ranking of 57 in July before being derailed by an ankle injury and subsequent surgery. She returned to the tour playing qualifying in Brisbane and Sydney this year. “We are very pleased to grant Jarmila a wildcard into Australian Open 2010,” Fed Cup Captain and national selector David Taylor said today. “She was just one place out of the main draw cut off (she is currently ranked 114), and her come back from injury is on track. We believe she deserves the opportunity to compete and wish her all the best.” Twenty-four year-old Matosevic has had a breakthrough year in 2009, reaching a career high ranking of 159 and finishing the year ranked184. Matosevic made his ATP main draw debut at the Medibank Sydney International, winning over James Duckworth (AUS), Sergei Bubka (UKR) and Daniel Gimeno-Traver (ESP). He ran into world No.49 Andreas Seppi in the first round, losing 6-4 6-4. Todd Woodbridge, Davis Cup Coach and national selector said, “Marinko has worked hard to achieve more consistency in his game and his improving results and rankings reflect this. It was great to see him have some good results and qualify in Sydney and I wish him well for the Australian Open next week.” As the Grand Slam of the Asia Pacific, the Australian Open also grants two wildcards to players from the region. This year the Asia Pacific wildcards have been granted to 20-year-old world No. 132 Sesil Karatantcha, and 22-year-old Andrey Golubev, ranked 132. Both players are from Kazakhstan. Australian Open wildcards are as follows: Men Nick Lindahl (AO Play-off winner), Bernard Tomic (discretionary), Carsten Ball (discretionary), Jason Kubler (discretionary), Marinko Matosevic (discretionary), Sebastien Grosjean (French Open reciprocal), Ryan Harrison (US Open reciprocal), Andrey Golubev (Asia Pacific). Women Casey Dellacqua (AO Play-off winner), Alicia Molik (discretionary), Olivia Rogowska (discretionary), Jarmila Groth (discretionary), Stephanie Cohen-Aloro (French Open reciprocal), Coco Vandeweghe (US Open reciprocal), Sesil Karatantcheva (Asia Pacific). http://www.tennis.com.au/pages/News....se&newsid=6654 |
