How many shots were hit in the longest point in tennis history? Take a guess, then read about the point in the New York Times. In fact, post your guess here and see if anyone gets close!

The story is by Dave Seminara, new TATeur. I told him I'd post the link. Pass it around if you can so the story can make it to the top 10 most popular stories list!

Little inside story: Dave was inspired to track down the players of the longest point after Andy Murray and Julian Benneteau engaged in a 53-shot rally at the Cincinnati masters. The press box went crazy after that point, everyone asking what the longest rally ever was. The ATP media rep lunged for his book of stats, because he knew the answer and loved telling people about it. A lot of media picked up the fact, but only Dave made the effort to track down those involved in the point.

Interesting story, but I don't think I would have enjoyd watching that "rally" let alone the entire match.

It would be cool to know what is the record for most consecutive shots (not in a match) on a tennis court providing that they all land in and between service line and baseline. Surely someone has attempted it! I would guess about 10,000.

Great story. I remember someone looking up the stat recently, maybe after that Murray match, but it's really interesting they are "embarrassed" by the match.

Well, every high-school tennis team does this in practice, and I always had a hard time getting past 20. But going for a record...would be interesting to know how long it could go.
