Default Let the Dude Talk!!
Now can I shove a ball down someone's throat????

This 20 year old guy, who had never even made it to the finals of a grand slam, dethrones 5-time champ RF and has to endure well coiffed Stepford Ladies for god knows how many minutes before he gets a chance to talk. That chance lasts about 90 seconds, and because English isn't his first language (his English isn't bad, but it just took him a while to say what he wanted) the mic gets taken away before he can say anything in Spanish. So he has to beg to get 30 seconds more air time. That was just another horrible example of how corporate the US Open has become. I couldn't believe that Dick wouldn't give him the mic. Can we vote that lineswoman who made that terrible, awful call, Serena, and Dick Enberg off the island? Now. Why are all the winners in the other Slams just given the mic (French, Australia) or asked questions and given time to answer and add anything they want (Wimbledon) and we can't give them 4 minutes???????

OK, my turn to be defaulted/penalized a point penalty on match point/whatever you want to call it!

Thank you, Kevin!

When Del Potro first asked Dick (his mother knew what she was doing when she named him) if he could say something in Spanish, I came unglued. I thought there is no way Enberg just told this guy "no". It wasn't until he was finally allowed to say something in Spanish, after asking for the microphone a second time, that he really got emotional.

That was just a pathetic display by Enberg, or who ever was whispering in his ear from the control room.

"Yo Delpo I'm really happy for you, I'mma let you finish, but Federer has had one of the best careers of all time--ONE OF THE BEST CAREERS OF ALL TIME!"

But yeah seriously, the US Open awards ceremony is a joke. Just ask Christine Henin.

And culturally, if Delpo had not addressed HIS PEOPLE IN ARGENTINA, that would have been a major, major insult for that country. It is not that I expect Enberg to know squat about other cultures, but Juan Martin not only wanted to say something to his people, he had no choice.
and it is not as if he had not earned it.

I couldn't have said it better myself, Pattyfan. I got incredibly pissed off when Dick said that they didn't have enough time, yet he went on about the car and money.
He was still able to do it in the end but only after he basically begged a second time.

Absolutely. That was appalling. The producer, or whoever, in the control truck that was rushing to get to a repeat of How I Met Your Mother should be ashamed.

In fact, I think all tennis fans should send a letter/email to CBS letting them know how disgraceful and disrespectful that was.

How cute are Delpo's nicknames? CBS gave them, but didn't bother to translate them to the audience (or if they did, I missed it)

Enano = dwarf/tiny one
Palito = stick

Well, I'm glad I wasn't the only one. I mean, he cried when he spoke in Spanish. It was so moving, and would have missed that if he hadn't insisted.

Also, about the nicknames...it's very common in Latin America to give nicknames that are the opposite of what the people are. When I lived in Colombia, I was "El Bonito ".

I totally agree with the feelings expressed in this thread. Dick Enberg was OK back in the day, but he has become an embarassment. I'm glad JMDP held his ground and got to speak in his native language.

These are the pages for feedback for CBS, and CBS Sports. I've already told them what I think. Please give them your opinion.

The runner up of the women's final gets to speak in three languages on ESPN and CBS doesn't want to let the MEN'S CHAMPION speak in two?

Oh, the "cards" I could play.....

I just sent emails myself. I toned down the message a bit from what was really going through my mind.

It was deplorable how they tried to brush del Potro aside like that.
