T.Paszek Investigated for doping....
Austria's Tamira Paszek investigated for violating doping rules
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS (CP) – 3 hours ago VIENNA — Tamira Paszek of Austria is being investigated by national anti-doping authorities after a medical treatment for a back injury allegedly violated doping regulations. During Paszek's treatment earlier this month, blood was taken for enrichment and later injected, which is not allowed under international anti-doping rules. Paszek said she was not aware that the treatment was possibly illegal until a reporter told her after an interview. Paszek alerted the Austrian anti-doping agency NADA, which confirmed Thursday that it was investigating. The 59th-ranked Paszek has struggled with back problems since last season. She has not played a match since retiring in the first round of Wimbledon. http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/news?slu...v=ap&type=lgns |

If she is the one who alerted them, obviously she is not a cheat.

Well it sounds like she went out of her way to alert officials. I think she won't be severely punished for this. The doctor or trainer or whoever handled this procedure ought to know better.
On the other hand, there have been some ludicrous punishments for doping offenses and Tamira probably should have known better too. I mean, isn't this blood doping? |

n. The process of increasing the number of circulating red blood cells, either by transfusing an individual with blood that has been previously removed or by administering erythropoietin, in order to increase the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood for improved athletic endurance. I sat in on a doping talk the ITF gave to juniors and it was insane. There are so many ways you could screw up without even knowing. Coming forward was a big boost for her. Hopefully it won't amount to anything.
|
Well there are certainly parts of Tamira that don't need to be enriched. Seeing as how she's not a Dr., isn't there some implicit trust you should have that they won't compromise her career? I'm sure the Dr. knew she was a pro tennis player and there had to be some discussion as to what can and can't be done.

What if they decide that...
1. A blood doping offense DID occur (no dispute there) and... 2. Paszek didn't know that she was committing a doping offense... Are they obligated to punish the offense just because it occurred? From what I read, it sounds like they go way out of their way to punish offenses just because they "happened" intentional or not http://forum.talkabouttennis.com/ima...lies/frown.png Paszek did the responsible thing and came forward. I think it would be good to...just acknowledge this happened and leave it at that with a warning that Paszek needs to pay VERY close attention to what the doctors are doing to her at all times. |

Tamira doesn't need anymore issues. Good grief. She does get massive kudos for alerting the Austria Anti-Dopping committee though, hopefully that'll say more for this situation that her breaking the rules. Especially since she isn't playing right now and all.

I don't understand why a doctor on the WTA tour would take blood and then re-inject it. They would have to know that's blood doping.
