What has happened to this tournament is a real shame.
Yeah, it used to have a plum spot closer to the US Open, and a week after Cincinnati, which is 90 minutes away. I remember seeing Agassi defaulted for slamming a ball out of the arena (deliberations on whether he would be defaulted took about an hour), and during a Sampras match, a kid jumped from the stands onto the court and tried to grab the Mercedes logo off the net (he yanked and yanked, never got it). Saw Guga and Safin go 7-6 in the third in 2000, which prompted me to pick Safin to win the US Open that year and look like a genius. Too bad there wasn't a suicide pool back then.

Still, the Roddick-Black final, 7-6 in the third, from three years ago was a beauty. Simon-Querrey last year was great. You could stand right by the fence of Simon's practices five days before he beat Federer in Toronto. The tournament still has great matches.

One of my favorite matches that year. I'd love to see James...Black...play that well again!

I never watched James' match against Federer in the Beijing Olympics. Was it a flashback to past seasons, or was Roger playing really badly?

OK, no need to answer this question I guess it was one of those recently usual 3-setters by Federer when the opponent goes on a warm streak.

Oops... honest mistake. Didn't proofread, either.

And plays... local boy and newly minted ATP champ Rajeev Ram, who is defending first-round points after beating Santoro last year.

And if he makes it to the main draw and lands in the bottom half, he has a decent shot to go deep. See, American tennis is fine!

Of course you folks must already know that Indy tried to get Blake to take Roddick's place, but Blake wanted Andy's appearance fee, so Indy said no and Blake said no... I'm sure there's a story on this..need to mpost a link

Not surprised that James wanted Andy's fee but Indy said no due to James' performance in DC and year. Also, wonder if James was getting ready for the hardcourt season this week. Think the USO Series is going to be James' last hurrah as making an effort to get in the Top 10(or even staying in the Top 20)
