Default The Orange Bowl 12/7-12/13/08
WORLD’S TOP JUNIOR TENNIS PLAYERS TO COMPETE AT 2008 DUNLOP ORANGE BOWL INTERNATIONAL TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS Girls’ 18s field features World No. 1 and Australian Open Champion
Arantxa Rus of The Netherlands and US Open Champion CoCo Vandeweghe
Seven of the World’s Top 10 Entered in the Boys’ 18s
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., November 4, 2008 -- The USTA today announced the acceptance list for the 62nd Dunlop Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships, which begins Sunday, December 7 at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park in Key Biscayne, Fla. The qualifying draw will take place beginning Friday, December 5.

The Orange Bowl features singles and doubles competition for boys and girls in 18-and-under and 16-and-under divisions. The boys’ and girls’ 18s singles winners receive a wild card entry in the qualifying round of the 2009 Sony Ericsson Open, a combined ATP and WTA Tour event at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park.

Founded by Eddie Herr in 1947, the Orange Bowl quickly became one of the premier international junior events in the world, and an annual showcase for the global scope of the game. Players from more than 50 countries have competed in the tournament, and champions have emerged from 23 different nations. Often, the race for the year-end world No. 1 ranking – and the title of ITF World Junior Champion – comes down to the Orange Bowl, and a number of Orange Bowl champions have used the occasion to announce plans to turn professional.

In 1998, the event moved from the clay courts at Flamingo Park in Miami Beach to the hard courts of its current location in Key Biscayne. Thirteen-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer and Elena Dementieva, who won the gold medal in women’s singles at the Beijing Olympics this summer, were the first 18s champions at this event on hard courts.

Other past winners of the Orange Bowl 18-and-under singles titles include: Chris Evert (1969, 1970), Bjorn Borg (1972), John McEnroe (1976), Ivan Lendl (1977), Gabriela Sabatini (1984), Mary Joe Fernandez (1986), Jim Courier (1987), Anna Kournikova (1995). Andy Roddick (1999), Vera Zvonareva (2000, 2001), Marcos Baghdatis (2003) and Nicole Vaidisova (2003) all won the event on hard courts.

“The Dunlop Orange Bowl provides our top junior players a chance to play world-class competition right here in the U.S. without the costs and hassle of international travel,” said tournament director Lew Brewer, who also serves as Director, Junior Competition, USTA Player Development. “The tournament is traditionally one of the best junior events of the season and this year’s fields are as strong as ever.”

The Boys’ 18s field includes seven of the top 10 players in the world, led by Tsung-Hua Yang of Chinese Taipei, currently No. 2 in the ITF World Junior Rankings, and the winner of the boys’ singles title at Roland Garros. Chase Buchanan of New Albany, Ohio, and Devin Britton of Jackson, Miss., will lead the American contingent. Buchanan won the Boys’ 18s singles title at the Easter Bowl in April and captured his first USTA Pro Circuit singles title at $10,000 Vero Beach, Fla. Britton finished runner-up in boys’ singles at the US Open in September.
The Girls’ 18s field features three of this year’s Grand Slam winners, led by Aranxta Rus of The Netherlands, currently No. 1 in the ITF World Junior Rankings, and No. 6 Laura Robson of Great Britain. Rus won the girls’ singles title at the Australian Open, and was a semifinalist in girls’ singles at Roland Garros. Robson won the girls’ singles title at Wimbledon at just 14 years of age. The American contingent is led by world No. 16 CoCo Vandeweghe of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., who won the girls’ singles title at the US Open in September; world No. 33 Mallory Burdette of Jackson, Ga., who reached the girls’ doubles final at the US Open; and Lauren Embree of Marco Island, Fla., who won the USTA Girls’ 18s National Clay Court Championships in July.

Story?

Dare I ask?
In high school our teams met a few times and we had a couple run ins. We almost claim to blows (I wish we had as I would have killed him, he makes me look strong which is quite the feat) when they knocked us out in the state semis when he was talking trash about some of my teamates. we had a couple other shouting matches too.

The kid is a terrific player (broke David Wheaton's record for youngest state champion when he won it in eigth grade) but an absolute prick

Yang claims No. 1 Year-End Ranking

Top seed Tsung-Hua Yang (TPE) has won his first round match of the 2008 Orange Bowl to claim the year-end number one ranking spot after a gripping three set match against unseeded American Matthew Kandath. Yang made heavy work of his first round match, winning the first set in a closely fought tie-break before losing the second and then finding form in the third set to see off Kathman 76 46 62. This first round win now sees him secure his position as World Number one at the end of the year.

The upset of the day saw fourteenth seed Shuichi Sekiguchi of Japan fall to unseeded American and wildcard entrant Ryan Noble in three sets. Other seeds to have played include ninth seed Ryan Lipman (USA) and fourth seed Cedrik-Marcel Stebe (GER) who both took three sets to overcome their opponents, whilst both eighth seed, Borut Puc (SLO), and seventh seed, Nikolaus Moser (AUT), enjoyed straight set victories to advance to the second round.

Ana Bogdan (ROU) began her quest to finish the year as world number one. Bogdan made light work of her opponent Magda Linette (POL), dispatching of her in straight sets to set up a second round match against Sachia Vickery (USA).

The girls’ event saw two seeds fall. Tenth seed Valeria Solovieva (RUS) lost in straight sets to American Julia Boserup, and seventh seed Richel Hogenkamp (NED) was defeated in three sets by Alison Riske (USA), a quarter-finalist at last year’s Orange Bowl.

Seeded players Yana Buchina (RUS), Silvia Njiric (CRO) and Zsofia Susanyi (HUN) all enjoyed straight set victories over their opponents to advance to the second round. However it was far from plain sailing for third and fifth seeds Mallory Burdette (USA) and Kristina Mladenovic (FRA) who took three sets to overcome their opponents both looking at one stage as if they might crash out in the first round.

The other seeds, including second seed Laura Robson, will take to the courts tomorrow as the girls' race for the number one spot continues.

Dimitrov is done with junior tennis. Don't know about Krajinovic. Tomic is not here either.

American Girls Dominate on Day Four at the Dunlop Orange Bowl

For years, tennis fans have wondered who would follow Venus and Serena Williams as the next great American female tennis players. Those fans would be wise to check out the daily draw sheets from the Dunlop Orange Bowl, where the results that American girls continue to post are simply stunning. At the end of the tournament’s hottest day thus far, Americans held 11 of 16 possible third round spots in the Girls’ 18s draw, and six of eight quarterfinal spots in the Girls’ 16s draw. Not to be outdone, American boys had quite a few successes as well.

The biggest surprise of the day was undoubtedly delivered by 16-year-old ChiChi Scholl of Pompano Beach, Fla., who stunned No. 6 Beatrice Gumulya of Indonesia, 7-6(1), 6-0. Gumulya, currently No. 31 in the ITF World Junior Rankings, seemed to lose her spirit after falling in the first-set tiebreaker, allowing Scholl, who needed a wild card just to get into the qualifying tournament, to run away with her biggest career victory. Allie Will of Boca Raton, Fla., herself a qualifier, also sent home a seeded player, No. 13 Zsofia Susyani of Hungary, 6-2, 6-1, while 15-year-old wild card Nicole Gibbs of Manhattan Beach, Calif., wasted little time in dispatching No. 3 seed and US Open Girls’ semifinalist Kristina Mladenovich of France, 6-3, 6-2. And another 15-year-old wild card, Sloane Stephens of Lauderhill, Fla., defeated her US Open Girls’ doubles final partner, No. 5 Mallory Burdette of Jackson, Ga., 6-3, 6-3.

The day’s highlight, however, belonged to Beatrice Capra, a 16-year-old from Ellicott City, Md., who lost the first set to France’s Amandine Hess, 1-6, and was down 1-4 in the second before storming back to win the last two sets 7-5, 7-5. Hesse fought off six match points in the final set before finally succumbing. As a reward for surviving the three hour marathon, Capra faces a third round showdown with No. 2 Laura Robson, who had little trouble defeating American qualifier Courtney Dolehide, 6-2. 6-1. Top seeded Ana Bogdan also moved on, defeating 13-year-old Sachia Vickery, 7-5, 6-1.

There was plenty of drama in the Boys’ 18s draw as well, as five of the 12 remaining seeded players were upset in Wednesday’s second round play. Evan King, a 16-year-old from Chicago, delivered a rousing upset as he fought back from a set down to win 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 over No. 12 Blaz Rola of Slovenia. And in a matchup of American southerners, US Open Boys’ finalist Devin Britton of Jackson, Miss., battled No. 15 Tennys Sandgren of Gallatin, Tenn., 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-3. Britton actually blew multiple set points in the first set, and then saved a number of match points in set number two. In Thursday’s third round, Britton will face his Dunlop Orange Bowl doubles partner Jarmere Jenkins of College Park, Ga. Jenkins, playing some of his best tennis this year, stormed past Guatemala’s Julen Uriguen, 6-2, 7-6(5).

The tournament’s hottest player, Alex Domijan of Wesley Chapel, Fla., had no problem beating Jordan Cox of Duluth, Ga., 6-3, 6-0 in a result eerily similar to last week’s quarterfinal match at the Eddie Herr Invitational. Domijan, the winner of 13 straight ITF matches, will next face top seeded Tsung-Hua Yang of Chinese Taipei, who with his two wins thus far has locked up the year-end No. 1 spot in the ITF World Junior Rankings. No. 2 seed Yuki Bhambri of India also advanced, beating Houston’s Harry Fowler, 6-2, 6-4.

Only two seeded players have survived to the quarterfinals of the Girls’ 16s draw: No. 1 seed Eugenie Bouchard of Canada, and No. 3 seed Madison Keys. Keys, who won the Girls’ 12s draw at last year’s Junior Orange Bowl, advanced in a battle of Boca Raton, Fla., 13-year-olds, beating Breaunna Addison 6-2, 6-3. Grace Min, a 14-year-old from Lawrenceville, Ga., pulled off the draw’s biggest upset, knocking out No. 2 Cristina Dinu of Romania 6-1, 6-1. She’ll next face another 14-year-old, Miami’s Chanelle Van Nguyen, who rolled past No. 8 Emi Mutaguchi, 6-0, 6-2. In another all-American quarterfinal, wild card Lauren Herring of Greenville, N.C., will face Giuliana Olmos of Fremont, Calif.

Four Americans reached the quarterfinals of the Boys’ 16s draw, including top seeds Denis Kudla and Raymond Sarmiento. Top-seeded Kudla of Arlington, Va., survived a tough three set match against No. 13 Nicholas Jones of Great Britain, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, in a match that had a number of momentum swings and some incredible shot-making from the baseline. No. 2 Raymond Sarmiento of Fontana, Calif., continuing his strong play from winning the Boys’ 16s title at the Eddie Herr, defeated Staten Island’s Alexander Petrone, 6-2, 6-3. While No. 3 Gianni Mina of France made it through to the quarterfinals, No. 4 Junior Ore of Gaithersburg, Md., was upset by 15-year-old Shane Vinsant of Keller, Texas, 7-5, 6-1.

Unfortunately, some rain is expected on Thursday. The big question, however, is whether the rain will dampen the hot play witnessed from the American contingency thus far.

I don't know what his heritage has to do with how he walks or runs but whatever.
The kid is very tall.

The Evans Report: Streaking Domijan Stops Top Seed By Richard Evans

It was as good a tennis match you could wish to see – a wonderful, fluctuating battle between two of the most promising young talents on the planet, played out over more than two hours under glowering Florida skies.

Just before the rain came, Alex Domijan from Saddlebrook completed a magnificent fight back from 3-5 in the third to beat No 1 seed Tsung-Hua Yang of Taipei 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 in the third round of the Orange Bowl Boys Under 18’s.

To put this win in perspective, one has to recognize that Yang is not only the No. 1 seed but, by beating Matthew Kandath in the first round, he clinched the year-end No. 1 spot on the ITF World Junior Rankings. Yang was coming to the end of a stellar year that had seen him win the Roland Garros juniors; reach the final of the Australian Open and the semifinals at Flushing Meadows. He is a fast, wiry, hard-hitting baseliner with weapons on both flanks.

But, with the winning post in sight, Yang seemed to lose half a yard of pace and fade physically. Not so his tall, unfussed 17-year-old opponent whose gangling gait speaks of his Croatian, Polish, Italian and even Scottish heritage http://www.tennisweek.com/news/fulls...Newsid=6623940
