The recent air raids by US Special Forces in Somalia against Islamists is the right step in striking out potential terrorists. These Islamists, if they had been established in Somalia, could have turned the country into a haven of Al Qaida figures. The strategic position o Somalia could have allowed the Islamists to increase their net throughout Africa, turning the continent into a battleground for US and allied forces. A point to remember is that the Global War on Terror is truly a global fight with no defined borders. Ethiopian military offensive into Somalia prevented Islamists from turning Somalia into a 'jihadi base'.
The US Joint Task Force Horn of Africa based in a former French base in Djibouti has performed splendidly to strike hard at the Al Qaida sponsored forces, The 'Islamic Courts Council'. However, the US has to advise Ethipians to not to harm civilians in Somalia. Any atrocity can be easily capitalized by Islamists to launch much touted 'Iraq style insurgency'. |
