One of the things that I have noticed that has been taken advantage of by Arabists and Jihadist-apologists is the language of "human rights violations," "crimes against humanity" and, specifically, "war crimes."
Saddam Hussein, he of the hundreds of thousands of murdered, is being tried for crimes against humanity. Nazi were tried for that and war crimes. When an NGO or a propagandist uses these terms, which are so broad, the worst is envisioned. Often times that is the intent, too, to group the most heinous conduct in history with qhat are questionable war times tactics - ie. asking a Pal Arab neighbor to knock on the door of a place where militants are suspected to be hiding out (like the FBI sometimes does with neighbors when pursuing criminals)... What the world needs is a new term, maybe even some internationally developed standards, specifc ones, that prescribe the generally accepted standards on fighting terrorism and war. Then, instead of lumping in a rough street fight or the targetting of a terrorist leader with medical expirimentation on prisoners and production of mass graves, we could have two different terms - violations of accepted war tactics, and war crimes/crimes against humanity, yada yada yada.. |
